I assume it will be a heavily pro-UMass crowd at this game. The days of people caring about UMass Basketball ended during the Clinton presidency.

This is a great deal for UMass. Three games and they never step foot on the homecourt of Holy Cross.

Last time UMass came to Hart was in '90-'91. My friend and I spent the game chatting with Bob Ryan who showed up as he put it "just to watch a good basketball game".
Funny thing is this past NCAA's in Prov, same friend and myself sat right in front of Ryan again for 2 days - and had a good laugh with him about it.

I remember Will Herndons dunking ability was unlike anything I had ever seen.

DCU is not a home game. It is not an imposing environment for HC opponents, even if the entire student body attends the game. The Hart is our home building. It makes no sense for us to all argue about locker rooms and bathrooms and other things at the Hart, if the "BIG DRAW" is to have games at the DCU to get larger programs to play here. This isn't Kentucky we're talking about, it's UMASS in 2016...

Good point. Why spend $ to significantly upgrade Hart bball arena if the big games will be in the DCU.

Unfortunately, the reality of college BBall scheduling in 2016 is brutal for teams in low major conferences so much so that we have to agree to deals like this with teams like UMass. Better than playing Maine at the Hart Center but not great.

The funny thing is that the last UMass team to visit the Hart (it was in Dec of '91 - I checked the UMass archives) was the sweet sixteen team that came out of the '92 NCAA's at the Centrum, and a LOT better team than the one HC will play this November at the Centrum. That was the tail end of Calipari "anyone, any time, any place" era before they got real good and could dictate who they played and where.

I was at that game too, ACTP. My lasting memory was Derek Farkas hounding UMass star Jim McCoy on D, so much so that after one deadball he threw the ball at Derek (I think right in front of Calipari).
As for Herdon, I remember the Globe doing a story about great leapers around that time, if if I recall correctly, legend had it that Herdon once jumped over a VW bug. Billy Walker and Rick Mashburn were also mentioned in the story.
Certainly one of the best teams to come to the Hart in the PL era.

My memory is getting a bit fogged, and I need a little help, Wasn't Ohio State's visit to the Hart, in the Worcester County National Bank Classic with Clark Kellogg.
One of the other teams in the tournament was UTEP, with Hall of Fame Coach Don Haskins.
Those were the days of Incredible basketball at The Hart Center.

That was the tail end of Calipari "anyone, any time, any place" era before they got real good and could dictate who they played and where. <Raises hand> I was there too. I wrote a scathing post-game article on this in The Crusader, calling out Blaney for getting schooled by the up-and-coming Calipari. (Though I think I called him "Jim Calipari" in the article. Ooops.) The seniors on the 1991-92 HC team were Scott Martzloff and David Rothstein. Rothstein was a reserve, and the UMass game was (I believe) the first game after Martzloff suffered a season-ending injury. John Young made his first start in Marrtzloff's place, meaning that this game was essentially the debut of the HC lineup that would win the PL the following season.

GB's Weakness: Defense. That's why Dougher's help was so important.

did you apologize to George when they won the PLC ? Well, it was ~16 months later when they won the PLT. I'm not sure that invalidated every previous criticism of him. But yes, I met with and interviewed him several times after that. GB was always a gentleman, even with punk student "reporters".

From Dougher's obit I was surprised to learn that he graduated from my parish's high school in Newark, St. Michaels, and coached bball there.
