And here's what one scout says about him:

When I was out in Corvallis, I mentioned to the Padres scout our two best players were Critelli and King. He said he had not heard of either of them. Now he has.

The scout you spoke with was most likely an northwest area scout, not a national cross checker. No reason he would know of any player not playing in his designated area.

Hard to take seriously any scout from a team whose cleanup hitter is Yangervis Solarte.

Renfroe has been hitting cleanup, but I know what you're getting at, '92. Solarte of originally-Yankee fame!

Interested to know where Brendan will be assigned Best bet would be Eugene in the Northwest League, short season A ball. That is the level most college pitchers go to. The Cubs don't have a team in the Appalachian League, which is the one league that is between true rookie leagues - where the HS signees and DSL graduates usually go - and short season A. Thus they have a glut of pitchers at Eugene. That could affect his landing spot.

Up on the Hill I heard it was going to be Eugene. But he's not on its roster tho Brian Glowicki another draftee is. MiLB is a Twilight Zone.

Found this on a post-draft Cubs blog:
20. Brendan King is another pitcher from an Ivy League school. The Cubs have had success with Kyle Hendricks and Duncan Robinson from Dartmouth. At 6’1″, King uses a four-pitch mix with a fastball at 90-92, a curve at 73-76, a cutter at 86, and a change at 84-85. This season, he threw 80.2 IP with 60 Ks and a 4.35 ERA. As a junior, he had a 2.84 ERA with 74 Ks in 82.1 IP. He already announced that he is more than likely to sign.

Believe it or not, there are parts of the country that think Holy Cross is in the Ivy League. We've had this discussion before under the old board. Because we play, and played even more so in the past against Ivy League teams, to those living far from the Northeast where the Ivies (and Holy Cross) reside, they would often see on TV scoreboards Holy Cross vs. various Ivy teams, notably Harvard, Dartmouth and Yale and therefore assume the Crusaders were in the same league. After all, when Ohio State plays Michigan, Michigan State, etc. etc. they were in the same Big 10. A variation of this is that I have heard some say "well, they are in the Catholic Ivy League, right?" (chuckling with the full knowledge that this would make the true Ivy Leaguers skin crawl).
All that said, I once worked in Ohio with and for two Yalies from Arkansas and Florida who felt they had an affinity with me because we were all from "elite" schools in the Northeast and not the Midwest Big10 huge public universities that most others had come from. They knew and respected Holy Cross. To their credit, neither of them looked down their noses at my HC education.

Don't cash that check. Pin it up on your den wall. When you're making $87Million a year in the Majors, you could return the check to the Cubs.
