Irving is a PHENOMENAL player! He better be. Price tag of Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, the first round pick of a horrible Nets team, and a kid named Zizic that we don't know much about but pundits seem to like. Seems a bit high given this guy really wanted out of Cleveland. Hopefully this guy's star continues to rise

Didn't they cut RPJr too? And I thought Red wasn't too excited about getting Cousy either and sort of took him begrudgingly.

Definitely a steep price to pay for increasing your chances of coming in second place for the next few years. Better to be a Knicks fan where you don't have any hope.

I don't know the backstory on Irving. I just know he is amazingly talented and a fierce warrior.

I disagree with the idea that it was a steep price to pay for the Celts.
Thomas is a nice player and fan favorite, but at his height he is not going to be a cornerstone of a championship team and will likely want a max contract next summer. With Hayward, Brown and Tatum on the wings, the need for Crowder should be minimal assuming those young players progress (which is something the Celts need to become a championship team anyway) Zizic is a long shot, and as the Warriors have proven, the Center position is pretty meaningless in today's run and gun NBA.
So assuming the Celtics would be able to extend Kyrie's contract, the deal comes down to whether you'd rather have Kyrie or the Brooklyn pick. A proven top 10-15 player in the NBA versus an unknown and unproven 18 year-old with no guarantee for success in the NBA (and absolutely no guarantee that the BK pick will actually be at the top of the draft). Tough to pass up on Kyrie given that choice.
