The great quarterback Y.A. Tittle has passed away at age 90. I remember him well as a young football fan in New England in those years pre-AFL/early AFL when the Giants were the team New Englanders followed and watched on TV each week. He was a heck of a passer

Yelberton Abraham I spent many a cold Sunday with my dad at Yank... Stadium screaming for him and the Giant Deeefense, led by Sam Huff , Huff, Huff, and against the great Jim Brown. He created many happy memories for me.

May he rest in peace. I watched him play many times and enjoyed almost all of them. There was a story that when he went to Green Bay with the Giants he saw a banner on the way to the hotel that said "Title Town". He said that Green Bay was certainly welcoming. He thought it had said "TittleTown."

That has to be one of the most memorable pictures in NFL history

A most touching quote from his daughter, ""You're the last leaf on the tree." (an interview when YA was 87)

Remember that Bears game well. Tittle took a shot to the knee that was legal then but would have cost the guy 100gs today and maybe a suspension too. The Giants had a veteran backup for a while but he either got hurt or retired; and their backup for that game was Glynn Griffing, a rookie. Went in and was so bad that crippled YA came back in. Griffing never played in the NFL again.
The Bears won 14-10. Believe one TD was a defensive one or a short drive after a turnover. Chicago's offense was not championship caliber, but their George Allen coached D was fantastic.

I just checked out the game on line. I remember a lot of Giants backup QB's (Gugliemi, Wood, Kennedy, and the former starter Charlie Conerly) but had forgotten Griffing. Sure enough, he never played again after an 0-1 stat line in the championship game. Tittle had perhaps the worst game of his sports career going 11 for 29 with 5 interceptions. Billy Wade for the Bears was not much better in the air going 10 for 28 but with no interceptions and he ran in both of the Bears touchdowns from near the goal line. The Giants fell apart the next season and the "Good bye Allie" chants started.....

As well as the plane that flew over the stadium trailing the same refrain i was saved from much of this sad state by being at HC from ‘63-67 and cheering the Crusaders to some historic wins, including 2 over bc

Those wins over BC were certainly memorable. I also remember the BC center snapping the ball over his punter's head for a safety - in two separate years! Ah...good times!
