AU wins ugly over VMI, 69-64, in the home opener at Bender Arena Saturday. Still playing without starting center Mark Gasperini (concussion), we lost freshman standout Sam Iorio eight minutes into the game to illness. Down two starters, we rallied after a sluggish start behind a career-high 26 points from guard Larry Motuzis, who was 9 of 17 from the floor, and added 7 rebounds and 3 steals in 40 minutes. Sa'eed Nelson with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Now 2-3 on the season with St. Francis (PA) next on Wednesday.

Loyola (1-4): L Northwestern, L Fairfield, L Towson, W Goucher, L UMass Lowell Loyola was on pace for an easy win vs UMass Lowell, leading 61-49 with about 13 minutes left. Then their All-PL PG Andre Walker was injured and missed the remainder of the game. The score after Walker left was UMass Lowell 34, Loyola 14. If he has a serious injury, Loyola goes from a potential middle-of-the-pack team to a potential cellar dweller.

When you look strictly at peer leagues, the PL isn't doing that bad.... Taking out games against P5 + Big East and non-D1 opponents, the PL is 18-20.

Top Frosh performances for the week . . .
James Karnik, LEH - Avg, 30.5m, 10.5p, 9.5r. Had a double-double. CALEB GREEN, HC - 37.5m, 12p, 3a, 3.5r. Justin Jaworski, LAF - 31m, 10.5p, 3r Jimmy Sotos, BUCK - 24m, 11p, 2.5a.
Karnik looks to have the edge for RoW, as Caleb's tough shooting afternoon vs. Albany hampers his chances.

SIX road games for the PL and our friends Ken Pomeroy has the PL teams as serious underdogs:
Bucknell 41% chance of winning Colgate 23% Lehigh 21% Boston U 35% American U 25% Lafayette 22%
If those percentages are accurate we should expect the PL to win 1 game, or 2 if good luck prevails.....

Kostecka did miss a large part of his junior year in high school, often wondered if Carmody backed away from him thinking he could do better or if Kostecka decided to go in a different direction due to coaching change. If it was the first scenario we came out the loser in that trade.

AU falls 100-89 at St. Francis (PA). Believe it's the first time we've given up 100 in a game since 1996. We were very, very good offensively, playing without both Mark Gasperini, who hasn't played a game yet this season after suffering a concussion during preseason workouts, and Sam Iorio (flu). Three players with 20 or more points, led by Sa'eed Nelson's 24 and Larry Motuzis's 23. But the Red Flash shot 60 percent from the floor and 10 of 23 on threes. Just couldn't stay in front of them or make any stops tonight.
