TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2017
Twas the Night Before Christmas, and up at the Luth,
some drama was building, and that was the truth.
Coach Carm in his office, stared at this huge pile,
with a scowl so nasty it would make the Grinch smile.
See his peers thought it funny to play Kris Kringle,
but it did not make Coach's funny bone tingle.
There were all kinds of gifts, like you never have seen,
but they all shared a similar juvenile theme.
There were sturdy little tricycles, sent by Joe Jones,
each one equipped with a cute play phone.
Some skateboards from Lewisburg, so shiny and bright
he wanted to hurl them so far out of sight.
From his buddy Mike Brennan, always ready to tease
came generous gift cards to Chuck-E-Cheese.
O'Hanlon decided to join in the fun,
he lovingly sent cool purple squirt guns.
Coach thought "maybe my reality is a bit out of touch,
but these crayons and Play Doh are just a bit much!'
But perhaps the most insulting gesture of all,
was an invite to practice at the Auburn Mall.
Coach sat back in his chair, and tried to calm down,
but still steamed he tore apart a Burger King crown!
And at last once he released that last bit of steam,
his mind turned to thoughts of his basketball team.
My kids may be young, but we have plenty of skills,
I'm certain with good coaching they'll all fit the bill.
KC with that smile, just chock full of glee
when he runs up the court after hitting a three.
Pat is so crafty, so crafty is he
he finds seams in the D that I usually can't see.
Ziggy's the guy on whom I'll depend
to provide steady hands when the games near the end.
Maybe Marcellis' health has let him down,
but with his great attitude we'll never see frowns.
Jehyve keeps working on his low post skills,
with many new moves that will produce lots of thrills.
Once Stevens is running depth issues are moot;
he'll give us some bulk, and 5 fouls to boot.
I can't forget Clayton, from the land of the Swiss
if he gets in a groove there's no way he will miss.
Then he thought "look at my freshmen, they're my pride and joy,
certainly they've no use for these juvenile toys"
Caleb's adjusted from virtually day one,
applying his strong will till each game can be won.
Faw looks just like a kid from my Pete Carril days,
nothing fancy is he, just makes play after play.
When I see Niego I see a future so bright,
with his instinctive game he does so many things right.
We'll keep working with Kyle, with so much to gain,
support him as he works through his growing pains.
Then there's my thin frosh I call Grandy,
he runs like a deer; has a shot sweet as candy.
And finally Mr. Butler, what a no nonsense kid,
will give us the toughness for our next tourney bid.
And I shouldn't forget Will, walk-on or not,
just maybe someday he'll hit a big shot.
Then suddenly Coach heard these loud bouncing sounds;
he dashed to the gym, and here's what he found:
Believe it or not, on that cold Christmas Eve,
his young team was practicing, to get up to speed!
Once finished they grabbed a gigantic sack,
and into it all of those gifts they did pack.
"Gifts are for kids!" they loudly shouted,
"We'll take them to the youth center!", and no one pouted.
Coach watched his boys, as they marched down the hill,
And before long things became quite still.
Coach now felt some comfort, he hadn't felt in a while;
"I just need some patience", he thought with a smile.
Then suddenly down hill, he saw 14 faces so bright,
Shouting Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
Merry Christmas, fellow Crossporters!
