When we play our OOC schedule we have, save for the Ivy portion, a discernible disadvantage by reason of admissions standards. That’s a fact of life. However, once we drop down to the PL portion of our schedule, there is no disadvantage in that regard.
Will Brown at UAlbany has a recruiting pipeline to Australia since he cannot compete here on the continent. Periodically we see an outstanding player recruited out of Canada. Do we till those vineyards?
It it is inconceivable that Colgate can out recruit us within the PL eligible recruiting pool. Is there a problem with our recruiting?
As to the Xs & Os, I am not a college level coach but I wonder hoe long we are going to stay with a very unproductive offense, a defense that doesn’t adjust to the current opponent’sstrenght and a failure to box out?
The concept of moving the ball around the perimeter for 20 seconds and then starting to look for a shot has not served us well at all. I see a lot of Siena games and have noticed that problem with them as well. The difference being that when they get too far down into the shot clock they have the personnel to go to the hoop slashing and often get fouled. Our end of shot clock answer seems to be a 30 foot heave. That’s a Hail Mary, not an offense.
The other difference is that Siena, which has a talent deficit lately in the MAAC, will move to a high post wheel offense when his perimeter offense stalls. Pathos is struggling and some are screaming for his scalp. The irony, from my perspective, is that the Holy Cross game a week ago may have saved his job. When the Cross came out like gangbbuster and jumped to a 10 point lead, he called time and changed things up and went on to beat us with a relatively weak team which lost to MAAC bottom feeder Marist last night However, given how poorly Siena was shooting ( 1 for10 on 3s in the second half) theey were in it as late as less than a minute to play when Maristgrabbed 2 critical rebounds. My point being that Sienais not a good team but yet is coached sufficiently well enough to make in game adjustments to make it competitive.
Finally, we have no excuse for our foul shooting and lack of boxing out. Holy Cross hoop is never going to return to the level it obtained prior to the formation of the Big East and we all must accept that but mediocrity or bottom feeding in the freakin’ Patriot League is beyond embarrassing.

For as long as we keep banging our heads against the wall with Carmody as the coach, expecting him to change his stubborn ways at age 66+. We need a total reboot and overhaul.

Hopefully those who are in charge of HC Athletics are actually paying attention and would recognize that change is desperately needed.

Have to give CBC his experienced team next year. After that?

Have to give CBC his experienced team next year. After that? Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Unless things drastically change this season, Carmody should not be allowed to get to the next recruiting class and open up the significant risk that our roster is set back even more.

FCMB lost his epaulets after 5 yrs. with one yr. left on his contract (the extra yr. that FADDR “negotiated” if FCMB had a winning season in one of his first 2 yrs. on the job).

We supposedly have a better AD now, who should see the very clear writing that is already on the wall. It will be time to move on unless there is a drastic turnaround in the next 2 months.

I felt this season was going to be a disappointment from day 1. This team had 3 guys who averaged more than 5 and a half minutes a game last year. Sadly this team is set up for good year/bad year cycles. I'm not going to panic because a "planned" bad year turns out bad. Next year is set up as a good year. If next year is a disappointment, a serious evaluation is in order. They need to break this cycle where every even numbered year is set up as a down/rebuilding year, but that's not going to happen in the next two months. I know it gets old saying the process takes patience, but changing directions every 3 years will get you nowhere in the long run

And we’re not in a cycle in which we’re even successful every other year — this is our third consecutive losing season.

The good year/bad year cycle will never end as long as Carmody is the coach and thinks bringing in 6 players in one class is a good idea. Guarantees that we will need to fully rebuild every 4 years, and makes it unlikely we’d ever have sustained success (e.g. Bucknell). It’s pretty clear Carmody isn’t interested in rebuilding the program for the long term and would prefer to win now. I don’t blame him for that unless he plans on coaching well into his 70s, which is unlikely, but it’s not the best course of action for HC basketball.

I continue to be amazed that there's so much hand-wringing about this team. Some people's expectations are IMO far out of line with reality. You CANNOT win in this league playing freshmen as much as we are playing them. That's the lot we have, as Tom noted above.
The path to this team being even middle-of-the-pack was basically to get a first-team PL performance from KC, get Jehyve and Pat to provide consistent supporting work for KC, and hope a couple of freshmen at a time could make sporadic contributions.
The frosh have played collectively about as well as anyone could expect, I think. KC hasn't been healthy and thus hasn't reached that all-PL level.
Next year should be a lot better. And it's not a bad thing to have our hopes pinned on this frosh class for the next 3.5 years. Class balancing, etc, is what it is... there's no quick fix.
Thinking Carmody has to go because he hasn't brought this group along fast enough is laughably short-sighted. Anyone suggesting that is, quite simply, embarrassing themselves. Things need to get better, indeed. But he's the one who is going to do it, or not, for the next several years.

Not only is the roster imbalanced, but Carmody has done an atrocious job of bringing in complementary players that make up a rotation. Floyd is the only guy on the roster who can play in the paint, and that isn’t going to change for a long time. We are one of the worst defensive and rebounding teams in the country, performing at a level that goes well below simply blaming it on not having upperclassmen. We do not scout our opponents and go into games with opponent-specific game plans, and the coaches have not made any adjustments to try and improve things. These are all coaching issues that are not just going to change simply because freshmen become sophomores.

Which is it??

Oh, so now you're in the film and game planning sessions? Interesting.
Agree to disagree. We'll see who's wrong over the next 3.5 years.

It pains me to say it, but I think that one reason we might get out recruited is our Roman Catholic identity. The Catholic pool is smaller that the overall pool of graduates, and many on this board have noted that the ranks of our competitors have many Catholic school graduates which we have failed to land. It seems that often, the high school Catholic athlete wants to "spread their wings" and branch out at this point. The blizzard of scandal that the church has dealt with has likely contributed to this trend. If you saw the movie, "Lady Bird", you likely remember the line where she told her nun guidance counselor that she absolutely did not want to go to a Catholic school. I think that the problem for us is compounded by our name. Not sure what to do about it, but I think it bears noting.

I think the high academic standards that HC looks for is a huge wall for most athletes..I believe it is a very small pool of student-athletes that are willing and able to jump into the HC education system...SO many of today's students want the easy downhill road to success..I think that high academic demand scares off many..and many of those who would like to compete, aren't accepted..I think the recruiting pool is much smaller than we all like to think! How to overcome this? I can only see one way, the academic people have to get creative in the curriculum, and find a way to help those "marginal" student athletes get into the school...(is that 2 ways?)

Which is it?? “The team felt a difference on the court, too. “The practices were quicker, more streamlined,” says Pat Baldwin, a former Northwestern player whom Collins brought on as an assistant. And the emphasis, at least initially, was on defense, slowing the game down. “For the first couple of workouts, we didn’t even touch a basketball, which was definitely a change to everyone there,” Lumpkin recalls. “He wanted us to know we were going to be a hard-nosed, blue-collar team. We’re going to stop guys, and the defense was going to win games.” One former player, Kale Abrahamson, remembers finishing what seemed like a routine scrimmage—only to receive a group text from a teammate later. “Guys, get here early,” it read, according to an account on the website Inside NU. “Film room. I’ve never seen a coaching staff this mad in my whole entire life.” www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/November-2017/How-Chris-Collins-Made-a-Winner-of-Northwestern-Basketball/It’s painfully obvious watching the games that the staff places very little emphasis on the film room.
