MSU has agreed to pay $500 million to 332 women abused by Dr. Larry Nassar. This dwarfs the $100 million payout PSU made in the Sandusky case.

MSU has agreed to pay $500 million to 332 women abused by Dr. Larry Nassar. This dwarfs the $100 million payout PSU made in the Sandusky case. But the payment per plaintiff is much lower since Penn State settled with 35 accusers and this wraps up more than 300 matters with some money set aside for as yet unknown claimants. The MSU matter reminds me of a horrendously sad case involving a Hartford doctor who molested hundreds of kids under the cover of claimed medical research. The claims were against the hospital where he practiced and where multiple people, including his colleagues and employees, looked the other way. By the time there was proof and the scope of the problem was realized there were statute of limitations problems but a number of talented lawyers, pushed hard and were able to resolve them for the survivors. I read the comments on the articles about Nassar and they were filled with anti lawyer rhetoric but, unfortunately, there isn't any other way to compensate the victims or to get the attention of institutions who have the chance to stop this abuse. |
