Another episode of grumpy old men in purple sweaters.
Can’t wait to see the TV series. Could be nominated for an Emmy.
Before any of you grumps state that I am berating the elderly, at my next reunion, I’ll be at the 50th, God willing.

I like the event and think it’s something positive NP has done to try to change the culture of HC athletics. Like everyone else, I also wish we had more athletic success to celebrate.

Hiring better coaches and having a clue how to develop them would change the culture. A banquet will not change the culture.

By, golly, Crucis, you've done it!! The new mascot . . . . the " Holy Cross Curmudgeons!" Now, who could that offend? Just imagine them wearing purple:

because so many of us are sick and tired of celebrating 'participation' when there are no successes to point to. Do you realize the millions of $ spent on our athletic program, if you were in charge, how would you characterize the return on that investment ? Right now, the return is not great but it is slightly improved. No, we have not won any championships this year and no team has an overall winning record. I get it. It's not great. But in the year over year measurement of performance within our league, we have improved. We will likely finish the year 7th overall in the PL President's Cup standings. A quick review of standings in spring sports shows we could finish 6th. I'm not sure we ever finished 6th overall, even when there were only 8 teams in the league! I have not done the research, but if I did, I'd venture to guess Holy Cross' perfomance in a good year from 1995 - 2013 was 1 championship team, 1 other team competing for a title, 3 middle of the pack teams and ~20 teams in the bottom 2. This year where we had 1 team completing for a title, ~15 middle of the pack teams teams and ~9 bottom 2. Is that where I want us to be? Of course not. Does that mean there is nothing worth celebrating? Of course not. Will the team of the year be an awkward award given win-loss performance? Probably. But given all the work these kids put in for a year on & off the field, it's worth getting everyone together to celebrate at the end of the year.

Perhaps you hit it on the head, 8485. They will all be celebrating that this year is over with better ones ahead.

HC was 6th in the President's Cup last year. Also 6th the year before. So even prior to this year there has been definite improvement. There have been many years HC finished 6th - but only once better than that. And that was when the league had 7 teams.

This isn't like the academy awards that are the same year in, year out. Skip the awkward moment and don't give that one out. For the record, I don't have a strong opinion on the evening as a whole. If the kids want to get together as all Crusader athletes instead of (or in addition to) individual team end of year parties, that's fine by me. I'm not really sure what there is for us to be unhappy about with this event

The athletes also displayed some real entertaining talent as I recall. Didn’t one of the football players do s spot on Coach Gilmore impression with a perfect accent?

Love the Unsung Hero award, among nominees, Silver Fox bus driver. I have seen him at away games for many years. For sure has seen more games than all of us put together

Unclear what "Moment of the Year" and "Best Individual Performance" relate to.
The four options for "Team of the Year" tells us everything we need to know about the state of HC athletics.

You can watch the show on the PLN tonight at 7 - I hope they have some good writers for the introduction of these awards. Since I started this thread, let me say that I do acknowledge the commitment (in many cases 12 months of training) that these student athletes make to wear the purple. I just wanted to say that I wish the school would find a way to structure the entire program in order that these athletes can find success. If you look at the 'mission statement' from the webpage, it states, in part: 'We keep score and track outcomes'. Well, who is accountable, if anyone for the outcomes ?

Every school on earth does this, even high schools. Do I want the HC teams to all play better? Yes. Does it make sense to "punish" them and not make the most of their athletic accomplishments (even in a limited fashion)? No.
A few grand on renting out a space for some catering won't bring in the next Coach K.
