This is slow-motion demolition. They seem to be sorting the material for disposal. At the rate this is going, the building won't be leveled by the end of this month.

Necessary, but still sad I spent many wonderful hours there, more than in any other campus location

It does appear that many of the wood trusses may be salvaged, and reused. Japanese tea house.?

The fieldhouse's dusty rubber floor was worthy of the whole thing being demolished on its own... and I spent a LOT of time in there.

wasn't bad in the mid 60s That's the standard response for basically anything regarding HC athletics on this board. In the mid 60s, I was two decades from being a speck on this earth. In the mid 60s, smoking was good for your health

In the mid 60s, smoking was good for your health Smoking was never "good" for your health (or the health of those around the addict)...even in the 60s. Commercials did have actors pose as doctors to say it was good (remember "I'm not a doctor but I play one on tv.") but was anyone really dumb enough to believe that?

There were some pretty good hoops teams in the 70s, early 80s, and 2000s, as well as fine football teams in the 80s and 90s

The fieldhouse's dusty rubber floor was worthy of the whole thing being demolished on its own... and I spent a LOT of time in there. Could the facility have been upgraded and modernized with the floor replaced among other improvements? Decision made, work started, no sense carrying on about it. Just sayin... Gee, I wonder if TPTB evaluated that opportunity before making the decision to demolish the building......

Could the facility have been upgraded and modernized with the floor replaced among other improvements? Decision made, work started, no sense carrying on about it. Just sayin... My first time in the field house was to see The Ray Charles concert. Was a great atmosphere that evening. The first of many memorable concerts I attended. The Chicago concert was a security nightmare, the fans crashed the venue and tore the north facing doors from their hinges. The concert was delayed until reasonable order could be restored, and the Fire Marshall in acquiesce to the volatility of the crowd allowed the concert to go forward. The field house was not a building easy to secure. Phreek can provide an insightful response regarding the cost vs cost of upgrade vs new facility. In the meetings I have attended regarding the Fieldhouse, it was clear that the structure of the building was not worth an upgrade. Face it, it was a wood structure with a brick facade, that was an environmental albatross. Watching the demolition on Friday and Saturday it was pretty clear it was not built like a proverbial brick....... In many ways, HC was very lucky a serious event that required evacuation or sprinkler remediation never occurred during its existence. It was great for nostalgia, but at what cost do you keep a structure that has clearly outlived it useful purpose. It was time. To quote the Chambers Brothers, one of the bands I wished had been able to appear in the Fieldhouse. “ Time has come today”.

Also a Chambers Brothers fan. Saw them at a coffee house in Boston.in the late 60s. Besides their great sound, Remember how tall they were. My favorite song of theirs was the cover of Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready

Could the facility have been upgraded and modernized with the floor replaced among other improvements? Decision made, work started, no sense carrying on about it. Just sayin... It could have been, but the feasibility studies showed it would have been prohibitively more expensive than demolition and rebuild, and likely less functional. IIRC from Fr. K's book, the Fieldhouse, which opened in March of 1948, was a "temporary" solution for a desperately needed gymnasium as the student body population swelled to over 1800 with post-war GI's returned to the states. 71 years later, I think the time for a permanent solution has arrived. And here's the story and picture from the opening of the new gymnasium from the March 16, 1948 Tomahawk. Follow the link and scroll down to the bottom of the first page college.holycross.edu/departments/archives/exhibits/crusader/crusader_pages/1940s/3_16_1948.pdfThe picture appears to be from the east end looking west (note the balcony on the far end). Other than the wood floor being changed to a rubber floor, which was then replaced in the late 90's - this is pretty much the way the Fieldhouse looked until last December when demolition started. I have a few fond memories of the place - mostly dances Spring, Sadie Hawkins, & Baccalaureate Balls - but it was time for a new place as the old place far outlived it's intended and useful life

Thanks for the link Some terrific stuff on the great hoops team of ‘48, as well as a baseball preview I did not know that the NCAA winner in 48 went to the Olympic Trials as a unit. Would have been an added bonus for the Crusaders

Scrolling the issue, I came across an article that my Uncle’s Brooklyn based band would be playing at HC.
