Since this covers both football and basketball, I am creating this thread, with the email response that I received from Holy Cross from the guy in charge of tickets. Not sure that this clarifies how they count attendance or actually makes it more confusing. I think I'll have to read it another 3-4 times!
Here is how I presented it:

A number of years ago, the season tickets at least, have had bar codes (I assume this was a Nate Pine idea) but when entering the facility, the ticket takers do not scan the tickets like at other venues like the DCU, Yankee Stadium, etc. Instead, they do it the old fashioned way and tear the ticket and keep the stub.
So, others have asked me, how is the attendance count made at a Holy Cross event? Speaking from experience, occasionally I have bought season tickets and either my wife or both of us can't make it.
As an example, if I have season tickets for me and my wife and I go but she doesn't, are my 2 season tickets counted as attending plus the actual stub of my attending for a count of 3? If my wife goes, is that a count of 4 (2 ticket sales + 2 actual stubs)?
I would find it hard to believe that anyone is actually matching ticket stubs to season ticket sales and suspect that there is a lot of double counting.
All this is pure speculation on my part and would appreciate some insight into how this is all done.

We run a report in our ticket system that shows the number of tickets we have OUT and this is the first step in measuring our attendance number. We then account for any student numbers, band, etc.
If you only have 2 tickets then those 2 tickets are only what is counted (there isn't any double counting). The tickets are bar coded even if they aren't scanned so we can match up the bar codes from the stub to what is in the report we run. It is a bit of a process, but unfortunately it is what our office has to work without without scanners.
