Can you imagine what West Virginia spends on travel as members of the Big 12, assuming they compete in however many sports there are in the conference. And UConn would jump to the Big XII at the drop of a hat if invited. WVU belongs in the Big Ten or ACC -- not enough incremental TV sets for those networks though.

Even with the travel, who has an easier time booking home games...a college in Hawaii or a college in Worcester?

I never understood why the America East never added NJIT. They only have 9 conference members as it is, so some team is always sitting out during the course of the season. It would mean two less OOC games they need to schedule. It would (slightly) close the gap between UMBC and the other conference members. I know that they are no powerhouse, but the America East always seemed like a natural fit to even off the conference membership. CCSU is another school that would seem much more natural in the America East than the NEC.

My understanding is that much of it has to do with facilities and women's teams. The school's urban location in Newark does not allow for a lot of outdoor sports venues and their indoor facilities are considered sub-par. Furthermore, I have read where NJIT, being a tech school (think WPI), has a very heavy out of whack male to female enrollment ratio. This has affected its female sports programs (competitive quality/participation).

A lot more to it than simply a conference asking a school to join it and it automatically happening.

NJIT has 17 scholarship sports (10 men, 7 women), including cross-country teams - which given the school's location, seems surprising.

There is a beautiful park with a well-known cross country course (as well as a couple of others) in or right next to Newark. It is used b y many high schools and a few college teams. A parallel would be VanCortland Park cross country in NYC. That course has a nation-wide reputation.

It's a short course where runners in meets have to do several loops.

They could use Warinanco Park since it is not much further.

A lot more to it than simply a conference asking a school to join it and it automatically happening. Or vice versa. NJIT applied for membership in the Patriot League in its early days as a D1 program. PL had no interest.

At the same time a number of PL teams scheduled NJIT and were glad to do so.

Most conferences have played multiple games with NJIT. For example, Big East teams and Big Ten teams have played many games with NJIT in recent years. Teams are always happy to get cheap home games with teams that don't ask for return games.
