The member of the clergy with his back to the camera is Rev. Edward Reese S.J. I first noticed him during the service with IHS embroidered on his stole. I didn't know who he was, but I thought, Anglicans don't embroider IHS on their vestments. He spoke at both the memorial service in Phoenix and at the National Cathedral. He was President of Brophy Prep in Phoenix, which the McCain children attended, and is now President of St. Ignatius Loyola Prep in San Francisco. Fr. Reese is a bit older than Fr. B., but they both graduated from Gonzaga and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.
Sen. McCain was laid to rest at USNA earlier today. They finally had the “missing man” flyover which I had been expecting all week. Seems most appropriate since the senator was an aviator though apparently not an especially good one having crashed more than one plane according to some accounts, not counting the one he was shot out of the sky with.
I suspect that had Nathan Hale not already said it, John McCain might have said “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.”
While so many statues are being torn down and new ones are not in vogue, here was a true American patriot that deserves one.
