Question from a casual observer of the football program:
Seems like an early characteristic of the Chesney era is an ability to finish strong, as HC has dominated the 4th Q vs. our two FCS opponents. (And heck, held things more respectable in the 2nd half vs BC's 6th-stringers, for whatever that's worth.) This also seems to be a 180-degree reversal from recent pre-Chesney history.
I'm wondering what the explanation is for this. How much is attributable to: - Chesney and the football staff
- Luth/facilities - strength and conditioning program/coaches
What I'm really asking: is what we're seeing here likely to translate to other sports/teams?

Also interested in this.
Also, part of it is probably that we're able to sustain drives on offense and not go 3 and out and allow out defense to wear down, as we were able to do circa 2009. That being said, our defense seems to be tireless.

If two people of equal size and ability are 10 yards away on opposite sides from the football... and the coach blows the whistle and says "GO GET IT!".. who gets to the ball first?

The coaches: Oliver has been at HC for 23 years. Allen for six years. (but does not coach football) Grautski, for one year, and came from Assumption. His career sequence is Fitchburg State, WPI, and Assumption. The Luth: I'll put my money on the Luth being the key difference. Its air-conditioned, and IMO, you can get a lot more workout time in an air-conditioned setting than you can in on an outdoor field during a Worcester summer. (Michigan's indoor practice facility is capable of being heated to Florida@New Year's temperatures, the idea being to condition the players to the heat.) www.nytimes.com/2005/09/20/health/surviving-the-playing-field-when-its-too-darn-hot.htmlBC's new indoor practice facility also has A/C. It should, for $53 million.

It is great to see so many positive factors at play in this discussion. They all contribute, but to pick one above others is difficult. They work together.
This is not an "either/or" forced fixed choice. To try to do that is foolish (IMO) when there are several contributing factors.

Phreak, you believe the new athletic facility, rather than a new head coach and new strength and conditioning coach for the team, is the reason or the team appearing to be better conditioned. Really?

Definitely an attitude/emotional/heart thing. Oliver is one of the best in the business and has been making players in all sports bigger, stronger, faster, etc. for years. Having a dedicated football strength coach is a benefit, not only because Oliver was handling all the varsity sports, with quality help in many cases, but because a dedicated strength coach can focus exclusively on FB players outside of the weight room as well as in, i.e. a strength coach that is gung-ho at practices, etc. Having a FB dedicated great strength coach in addition to a great Oliver can only be viewed as a positive.
When we were winning under Allen and Gilmore, there was not prevalent talk about players giving up. The late game break downs have been something that were more prevalent during the last few years than in more distant past (10+ years ago). I think that as winning begets winning, acceptance of losing results in losing. I assume, with no direct knowledge and trying not talk poorly about the past coaching staff, that Chesney has injected a new attitude with regard to the expectation to win, rather than the acceptance that some games are lost.

SoV, I am talking about conditioning, which is separate from attitude / enthusiasm. As I understand the rules, the coaches can have only very limited interaction with players during the summer. However, the strength and conditioning coach(s) are allowed to have quite unlimited interaction during this period. I looked at Assumption's 2017 record, to see if there was a 3rd /4th quarter scoring effect that might be attributed to Assumption being the better conditioned team.. Most Assumption games were complete blowouts, so the sample is limited. . W over Kutztown State on Sept 2, 31-28. Kutztown State outscored Assumption 14-10 in the 3rd and 4th quarters. (Closest regular season W.) L to Bentley on Nov 11, 31-35. Both teams scored 21 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Playoffs: W over California (PA) , 40-31 on Nov 18 @ Worcester. Assumption outscored California 30-14 in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Assumption's four offensive scores were on drives that totaled 120 yards. The other score was an interception return for a TD. Perhaps conditioning played a role in this game. W over Findlay on Nov 25, 45-26 @ Worcester..Assumption had 9 (non-penalty) first downs in this game; Findlay 27. Findlay had 280 yards more in total offense than Assumption. Assumption's margin of victory resulted from two kickoff returns and one interception return (total 251 return yards) in the 3rd and 4th quarters. L to Indiana (PA) on Dec 2 @ Indiana 22-27. Indiana outscored Assumption in the 3rd and 4th quarters 13-9. If Chesney and the strength and conditioning coach had such a great conditioning scheme at Assumption, I would expect a more dominant second half from Assumption than I see in these five games, en toto. ___________________________________ The USMC curtails strenuous exercise for all personnel with less than 12 weeks training in hot weather when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature reaches 88F. www.ready.marines.mil/Stay-Informed/Natural-Hazards/Extreme-Heat/Flag-Conditions/An example of a wet bulb globe temperature forecast for a city at the latitude of northern NC tomorrow. Well, one thing that hasn’t changed is S&C coach Oliver.
I would certainly hope that LAC has SOMETHING to do with it after the many millions spent on it. I am making a guess that the enthusiasm and drive of Coach Chesney has the ancillary benefit of keeping the adrenaline pumping to the end of the game.
Let’s see how all the other HC sports are doing regarding stamina. If they are all improved then perhaps it is LAC. If only football, then somehow Chesney must be a bigger factor.

They have a dedicated strength coach for football now. They practices every day in the heat and humidity of the summer INSTEAD of the air conditioning in the Luth.

Thought I remember from the tour of the building that the indoor field has special air handlers, and is not air conditioned As an aside, I read where it was 90 degrees in the carrier dome on Saturday for the FSU vs Syracuse game. Wouldn't you think of all places that would have AC, the Carrier Dome would be on top of the list.

When we were there for our basketball game couple years ago, they were talking about a major renovation of the place. It's old, huge, and not very comfortable small bleacher seats, at least at the basketball end. Not sure of the status these days

Just bumping an old thread at season's end.
Full-season total, 4th-quarter scoring:
HC 112 Opp 34 (and 14 of these were BC)
I find this fascinating.

What flies under the radar here is the ability for these students to actually sleep. Not the biggest reason why were scoring points in the fourth quarter, but one of the many changes that plays in here.
Under previous regime school of thought, if you had to get up early for breakfast sign ins (8:15 the LATEST), you'd get to bed early. In what world is that logical at a high academic institution? Coach Ches has abolished breakfast sign in early (bc really what college football player wouldnt eat breakfast) in favor of actual tangible rest. This coupled with a schedule less about exertion and more about mental preparedness I think leads into the team being in better shape in Q4
