Two UMass verbal commits (Lawrence Academy QB Brady Martin and BB&N OL Andrew Nee) decommitted last night within hours of one another. Both are ⭐️⭐️⭐️ recruits. This is a big loss for the Minutemen and a rather ominous sign for that program. Something must be afoot there. Either of them would be a huge get for the Crusaders. Not looking good for UMass. In addition to the two Massachusetts recruits, UMass also got a de-commitment from a DB from New Jersey earlier this week. And, two or three weeks ago, they lost an LB who had committed but then was apparently forced to retire from football due to concussion issues.

Very late in the game to decommit. Having the player on your campus 10 days before signing just a day after decommiting to me is a good sign. They already have 5 OL. Hope he is going to play DL at that size.
Fingers crossed on Nee

It is a most difficult time for UMass. I am sure they will work through this...but that will take time and they would seem to have some difficult days ahead.

Why on Earth would anyone want to play football at UMass right now? How they recruit anyone is beyond me.

Why on Earth would anyone want to play football at UMass right now? How they recruit anyone is beyond me. Agreed. It is, however, an FBS D1 program (for the moment, at least) and they can offer kids a full scholarship. That will always be an attractive enticement to kids who dream of playing FBS football, even if they struggle to compete.

I guess but in reality the dream ends up being a nightmare - getting pounded week in and week out in front of no fans for a decent to maybe slightly above average generic state school that no one in the state really cares about. UMass is FBS in name only. BC is the de facto FBS school of MA and that won’t change. These kids need better advisement and UMass needs to go back to its once proud FCS tradition. Also, in general perhaps the significance of the acronym FBS needs to be demystified for these kids. D1 is D1, and beyond that P5 is P5.

I think I'd go there only if I had a SCHOLARSHIP IN HAND, plain and simple. None of that other stuff, J***sus C**rist! If they wanted to redshirt me, that's fine.

When it comes to recruiting players, I think it really hurts UMass and UConn that no young boy grows up dreaming of playing for those schools. We hear stories all the time of big-time state schools issuing "offers" to "preferred walk-ons"--I think a lot of those are just kids who grew up as fanatical supporters of that state school. They would rather say "I played for State U" (and paid their own way) than accept a scholarship, full or partial, to some other less-desired program. No one grows up with the same feelings about UMass or UConn--in my opinion.

When I lived in MA, I went to UMass FB games to see their nationally award-winning band. I know from personal experience that a significant number of attendees were there for the band. This was more than 10 yrs ago.

You are right about that! Their band was terrific (although not good enough for me to go to a UMass game if HC was not playing them). Is their band still as good as it once was?

Matt Duchemin’s mother liked the tweet. Maybe he is the first one to commit?

I’ll guess Duchemin and the OL who de-committed from UMass.

Man is Umass screwed. They might have just crossed the point of no return. They have difficulty recruiting and selling themselves as-is and now kids have to question how real their awarded scholarship is? Going D1-A has cost Umass 20 years and I don’t think that’s an exaggeration. Sad.

UMass may be the worst FBS team in the country. Nee is lucky to have escaped. Hopefully he comes to HC and gets to go the the NCAA FCS tourney four times.

Nice runback and , as noted, particularly enjoyable to watch with the camera in that position
