Apparently not, but Coach Barese's recruiting areas include California and Arizona. And we do recruit in Texas, although it's not clear which assistant coach is assigned to that area.

Apparently not, but Coach Barese's recruiting areas include California and Arizona. And we do recruit in Texas, although it's not clear which assistant coach is assigned to that area. I went looking for stats on the number of high school football players in CA (about 72,000+) and TX (about 167,000 (includes six man football)), and learned that football participation is dropping markedly. In Texas, its dropping more sharply from a larger base. www.texasmonthly.com/articles/texas-high-school-football/calmatters.org/articles/california-high-school-football-participation-drops/I consider CA a rich reservoir of prospective talent, partly because there are only 11 Div I football schools in the state. If five percent of the 18,000 football players who graduate annually in CA are capable of playing Div I, that's 900 players. most of whom would wind up playing out-of-state. (900 players would be a little over one per high school team) I won't quote Horace Greeley "Go west, young man" because he apparently never said that.

Agree with pp on Cali being a rich reservoir of potential football talent at HC....downside is getting kids to come that far East I suppose. Wasn't Doug Cosbie a Cali kid who left HC in the 70s? Can be a tough sell is all I'm saying.
There is also a dearth of FCS programs in much of the Midwest...many of those states have very few if any FCS public and/or private schools that offer scholarships.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_CosbieYes. Doug is from Mt. View CA, and attended St. Francis High School and DeAnza Community College before arriving at Holy Cross. I guess the Worcester winter was one of the reasons he decided to transfer back to the Bay Area to attend Santa Clara. Santa Clara in the winter is definitely gentler than Worcester. Too bad Santa Clara dropped football. They had a rich football tradition.
