Let me first say that I am a big supporter of the selection of Coach Chesney. Over time with his track record and ability to recruit, I truly believe that he will put the program on a winning course.
I attended the BC game and have watched every other game on Stadium TV.
In my opinion, although this team clearly lacks talent and depth at several positions, they play with a great deal of enthusiasm.....especially on defense.
However, the number of missed assignments, the very unimaginative play calling, and the numerous penalties (always at seemingly key moments) tells me that there is something missing in the coaching.
The team seems to lack playing discipline.
What do others think?. Am I being too harsh?

I'll chime in here, rather than in the Bucknell in-game thread,
1.) The offense is static, predictable, and uninspired. When defenses adjust, as Bucknell did today, there is no counter-adjustment by the offense. I am not a fan of rolling out a QB who does not have sufficient arm strength to keep defenders from only having to defend half the field.
2.) Not having seen a game in person, I am perplexed by the recurring comments of receivers not being able to gain separation. These same receivers gained separation last year. I'm left to conclude its the routes being run. Also, defenses need not worry about the TE, or a RB like Flaherty sprinting out to catch a pass, Can Bruno catch? He seems to be a Flaherty type.
3.) The ST penalties today reflect poor coaching; e.g., a player should never run up the back of a player on the coverage team. On running into the kicker, the coach lacked situational awareness, and should have instructed the team to avoid such penalties.
4.) My sense is that after watching three or four HC games on film, opposing coaches are better at preparing their team to play HC, than the HC coaches are in preparing HC to meet the next opponent.
5.) Whatever supposed conditioning advantage HC had early-on is no longer evident.
6.) I think the defense, particularly the DL and LBs, plays well and with enthusiasm.

1) You have a D3 quarterback at best 2) The defensive secondary is small and slow 3) Bucknell took away the run and HC has no passing game

I haven't read the game thread, can only imagine. So here goes from an eyewitness.
The number of defensive mistakes was not that great. A long pass that led to Bucknell's field goal (the guy was wide open a split second after the ball was snapped, a clear missed assignment); another pass across the middle to #5 that luckily "only" gained 20 yards, also no one around him; the 36 yard running td seemed way to easy; and, the third-and qb draw that everyone ran past the guy.
The rest of the points were set up by HC's offense (fumble at the 25 or 30) and the long punt runback (how could FOUR guys surrounding the returner result in such a big play?). Those two plays gave them 10 points and had the Bucknell coach not been extremely conservative and kicked a fg on the one foot line, most likely would have been 14.
As far as the offense goes, the usual two runs then try to pass was the prevailing strategy in the first half. One drive was obviously successful, then several dismal failures in a row. Then, at the end of the half, HC seemed to be advancing the ball down the field passing. So what do they do? Run on first down, well, ok; it goes nowhere, THEN THEY RAN ON SECOND DOWN!. Couldn't believe it. Followed by a sack to basically end the half. Awful.
Second half, it was fourth and a solid two to go right in front of me. In comes Oliver and said to my wife. "They're too far away to just run it up the middle". And that's exactly what they did. Oliver made a decent run but he was definitely short (I think even with the review they short-changed him by half a yard; but half a yard more still would have been half a yard too little). And, to add insult to injury, #68 should block better and keep his damn mouth shut; maybe his ass should have been on the bench after that penalty. Nothing personal against the kid. But maybe that's where the coaching/lack of discipline comes in. That and the roughing-the-kicker* penalty.
Then, of course, first and goal from the 8. Four straight runs. Cozier into the pile on fourth down. NO WAY, JOSE! What's it, four years now, Diquan Walker followed by Cozier; Tom Gilmore followed by Bob Chesney, AND THE DAMN PLAY NEVER CHANGES.
The rest of the game was dictated by that failure.
* I never considered that the punt was tipped; it would have been quite surprising if it did; it went pretty far.

no What do others think? "number of missed assignments"? if true then coaching is an important factor in our results so far. if players don't know how to execute plays, offense, defense, special teams, then we will not succeed regardless of the caliber of our opposition. i think that "very unimaginative play calling" is not a decisive factor. we will not win football games by "very imaginative play calling". it's execution, i.e. eliminate missed assignments that is the key to building a successful football program. rule #1 KISS (keep it simple stupid) GO 'SADERS!

It doesn't have to be that imaginative. But fourth and a long two and running it up the gut just doesn't usually work (giving one example). Running a tiny back into the middle of the line on the goal line usually doesn't either.

JMO but it might be a good idea to see what the 3* 3rd stringer can do. I know, I know, he's not very mobile. Can he get the ball out quick and hit targets downfield? The team has two PL losses and no chance of winning the league. What's to lose?

I saw the HC defender, who tried to block the BU punt, slide across the ground to be stepped on by the punter. I am not sure how that is "running into the kicker." How is he supposed to change the direction of a slide?

Made that very point in the other thread, Rob. However, I would have just tried for a good return rather than try to block the punt.

I think there are two primary elements of coaching:
1. Team management (cohesiveness, enthusiasm, character, etc)
2. Play calling, strategy, preparation, ability to adjust, adapt and counter.
I give high marks for 1.
I give low marks for 2.

The team has two PL losses and no chance of winning the league. What's to lose?s Holy Cross has 5 quarterbacks on the roster. With both a winning season and the PL pretty much out of reach (even if statistically "possible"), why not try some fresh blood if Wade continues to be inconsistent against UNH? If Clifford cannot do the job as a junior, can we really rely on him to get it done next year? Transfer QBs are a nice thought, but that is unlikely. I have confidence in Coach Chesney. I like the attitude he has brought to this program. This was to be a learning season and it clearly is. We are using a number of younger players now. Why not try one at QB if things do not improve for our veteran? Just random thoughts. PS: It may have been said elsewhere, but HC was hurt by some questionable calls at the BU goal line late in the game. The replays made it appear HC scored a TD on third down and the first BU play from the end zone appeared to be a clear safety. Yes, they eventually gave a safety to HC on the next play (even then hesitating before making the call) but it ate up some valuable time.

I think the defense has mostly been very good this season. Special teams has been average.
Our offense has been nothing short of a disaster. Our QB situation is certainly partially to blame, but the biggest issue is with the man calling the plays. Time to turn over those duties to Ari C.

This thread should not exist. It is an insult to the man who has been a very successful coach at each school where he has worked. Judging him after a few games is ridiculous.

I have said since the Colgate game (which I attended, NBD), that our offensive coordinator is in over his head.
The defense has been good all season.
Fire Murphy. Hire someone else in the offseason. Allow Smith or Confessor to call the plays.

I agree with some but not all of the previous comments.... My biggest complaint today with regard to our QB is that he locks in on one receiver thus telegraphs where is going to throw the ball! He does not see the whole field and go to his second, third and fourth options! Also, his passes today were very wobbly and not good spirals! Until we get better players it is still a work in progress that could take 2 or 3 more years.

I have been thinking about the offense and I do think that there is some merit to the criticisms of the play calling on offense. Certainly, I could see more use of the qb as a runner, perhaps qb draws. Also, they might want to try more quick passes to a rb with linemen releasing after the pass out front to block. But, are the linemen quick enough? Also, more misdirection plays might be successful, if the line can hold. I'm sure that there are many other different sets and plays that would give the offense much needed variety. But, are the players capable of successfully executing these plays? How far along in the offensive playbook are they? I don't agree at all that Coach Murphy should be fired. I believe that it would be disastrous for team morale and cohesiveness to fire the coach midseason. Be patient, let the season work out and allow Head Coach Chesney the time to succeed. LoveHC Have you looked at Murphy's coaching career? Might want to take a glimpse before you decide you're okay with 6 more games.

Also, team morale and cohesiveness? So you believe we currently have that? I am pretty sure most Div III teams could beat Bucknell this year.
