May he rest in peace. His son Steve lived on my floor in Wheeler--nice guy who played a little basketball and went on to considerable success at ESPN--must have made his very accomplished father proud.
From the NY Times where he worked for many, many years:
Mr. Anderson wrote for the newspaper at Xavier High School in Manhattan and became the sports editor of the paper at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. He graduated from there in 1951 with a degree in English literature.
A long, long line of distinguished writers, especially sports journalists, came from the ranks of "The Crusader."
My dad ('50) was on the staff of the paper when Dave was the assistant Sports editor and knew him a bit and always spoke highly of him.
When in high school, an HC classmate of mine was considering a career in journalism and possibly sports journalism. He was the son of a long time friend of the family and my dad may have had a hand in connecting him with Dave Anderson. I believe Dave Anderson advised him to get the best liberal arts education he could as that would make him a better writer and reporter than any journalism curriculum. That, in part, is what led Jim to Holy Cross and he has been a reporter - albeit not a sports reporter - since graduating.
