Heading down to the Hart tonight for the opener, hoping for a good crowd. Will be especially watching the work in goal. Go Cross!

3-1 end of 2nd HC goalie Nixon has 22 saves Canisius goalie has 12 saves with 2 goals against We must have had an own goal ? No such thing as an own goal in hockey. The goal just gets attributed to the closest offensive player to the puck. We scored off of a delayed penalty. Canisius pulled their goalie to get an extra skater, and then an errant pass ended up in their goal. Never seen that happen before.

Canisius was picked to finish second in the league and received 5 of the 15 first-place votes. Very solid W to start the season.

Most importantly, did you get a picture of the no-such-thing "own goal," Brian?

Couple observations on the game. . . . Looked like the place was at capacity, thanks to a large contingent of youth league players, good atmosphere . . . To my untrained eye, thought Canisius had more talent, but we outworked and outhustled them from beginning to end, especially in the first two periods - putting bodies on them everywhere, giving up bodies to block shots, scrapping for every face-off. Thought the turning point came after they cut the lead to 2-1, when Holy Cross pushed the puck and fought to keep it in their end, breaking through finally with what turned out to be the decisive third goal - again, the product of hard work. . . . Some folks were worried about the goal-tending, but Tommy Nixon played very well and got tremendous support from the defense. Didn't have much of a chance on either goal, as he was effectively screened. Gordon took a significant turn in the pre-game, so unlike last year, keeper duties will likely be shared this season. . . . Too many penalties, but great work by HC killing all but one. . . . Unlike last year, there was no third-period meltdown - a little tired, and Canisius pressed the action offensively, but we continued effective at the defensive end.
Folks more familiar with the game can perhaps explain the strategy of pulling the goalie in the delayed penalty situation of the second period, which arguably cost Canisius the game (they repeated the move later in the period, too). I don't get the risk-reward thinking at all.
Very encouraging start for the boys.

It was a great effort last night by the Crusaders. I agree that the rink looked pretty full for a Friday night game thanks to the Jr Crusaders and other youth squads. The band made it for a number of games last year to contribute to the atmosphere.
I am not sure if it is at all related to our football conditioning and 4th quarter comebacks but the hockey team did appear to hang in there in the 3rd more than previous seasons. Strategy also played a role as we stayed fairly aggressive on our forecheck and neutral zone coverage to prevent Canisius from getting in deep easily. As in football the prevent defense prevents winning (or so they say).
On a delayed penalty, the whistle blows when the offending team touches the puck with the stick and or gains possession. Since they cannot shoot down the ice without a whistle, it has become a defacto part of hockey to pull your goalie for an extra skater on the delayed penalty.

On top of that, if you score with the extra attacker on a delayed penalty, the penalty still has to be served in college

Not a good look for Gordon giving up seven...What happened to Nixon for him to be replaced four minutes plus into the game?

Lost 7-6. Tough to go up 5-3 early in the third and get outscored 4-1 the rest of the way on your home ice.
