I am very happy for my friends who are Sox fans. Now, just to stir it up a little, are you happier when the Sox win or the Pats?

I would say Sox because I have taken their defeats (75, 78, 86, 03) much worse than the Pats failures. On the other hand, as both teams have become regular winners (unlike the first forty years of my life) I would give up another World Series or Super Bowl for a couple HC hoops wins in the Big Dance.

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox and to their fans. This Red Sox team most assuredly ranks among the greatest teams in the history of baseball. I would like to see a list of the top 5 teams of all time. LoveHC I don't think you'd find this Red Sox team on that short list but I'll give it some thought

Congrats to all of the Red Sox fans here on Crossports. They were the best team all year and definitely deserved to win. Now we can all root for the hoops team together for the next several months before retreating to our respective MLB camps in April.

“Among” contains a long list The NYT author using the total number of wins to prove his case is weak considering the multiple layers of playoff game recently compared to most of baseball history.

So hard to rank baseball teams imho. Such a different sport. I mean, it's not like you re speculating if Craig Kimbrel could post up Mo Rivera, or if Mookie Betts could beat Deon Sanders on a post pattern.
I do believe this Sox team had intangibles that are hard to measure.

Let's take a look at these Red Sox versus those 1998 Yankees. With all the changes over the years perhaps it's best to see how each of those teams compared to the rest of its league
Factor= Red Sox vs 2018 AL/Yanks vs 1998 AL
Batting Avg= 1/2, i.e. the Red Sox led 2018 AL in batting average while the Yankees finished 2nd in 1998 AL Slugging= 1/4 OBP= 1/1 OPS= 1/1 Fielding Avg= 2/3 ERA= 3/1 Runs Scored= 1/1 Opponents Runs= 3/1
The Red Sox scored 876 runs and gave up 647 so 229 net runs, an average margin of 1.4 runs per game
The Yankees scored 965 runs and gave up 656 so 309 net runs, an average margin of 1.9 runs per game, a huge advantage over the 2018 Red Sox
All this is presented with the understanding that W-L is what counts--no argument there. Still, I thought some might enjoy looking at these causal factors

I read that Giants fans are also celebrating and trolling their erstwhile foe the Dodgers for their loss to the Sox. Some things never change. LoveHC After ‘41 The NY Giants could beat the Brooklyn Dodgers for the NL pennant only twice—in ‘51, ‘54. Brooklyn—’41,’47, ‘49 ‘52, ‘53, ‘55, ‘56

If we’re being honest, the fact that a pretty mediocre Yankees team won 100 games should tell us everything we need to know about the strength of the MLB field in 2018.

How many "mediocre" teams set records for HRs?
(Not that it is ever needed but that is a good quote for "bulletin board" material for the Yanks...or at least for Yankee fans)

How many "mediocre" teams set records for HRs? (Not that it is ever needed but that is a good quote for "bulletin board" material for the Yanks...or at least for Yankee fans) Here are the other teams in the Top 10 for most home runs in a season. Not one even made it to the World Series, only four made it to the post-season at all, and three finished under .500.
OPS - not HRs - is what matters offensively.
Team, HRs - Wins, Post-Season?
97 SEA, 264 - 90 W, Lost in ALCS 05 TEX, 260 - 79W, No. 10 TOR, 257 - 85W, No 96 BAL, 257 - 88W, Lost in ALCS 16 BAL, 253 - 89W, Lost in ALCS 00 HOU, 249 - 72W, No 01 TEX, 246 - 73W, No 12 NYY, 245 - 95W, Lost in ALCS 96 SEA, 245 - 85W, No

Interesting, so homers, every one of which accounts for at least 1 run, do not matter offensively. I'll try to remember that. The 266 HR mark hit by the Yanks was a Major League Baseball record, so what bearing does the "top 10" have in declaring they were a "pretty mediocre" team? They also won 100 games, not bad for a mediocre team.

The 266 HR mark hit by the Yanks was a Major League Baseball record, so what bearing does the "top 10" have in declaring they were a "pretty mediocre" team? They also won 100 games, not bad for a mediocre team. I stand corrected - OPS is a more important measure than HRs offensively.
I didn't say the Yankees were offensively mediocre. I simply provided data which shows that there is no correlation between high HR totals and post-season success, as anybody who knows the history of the Red Sox during Williams' career understands all too well . The 2018 Yankees won 100 games, and I'm sure they enjoyed watching the World Series on their big-screen TVs - like other teams who put all their offensive eggs in the HR basket..
But on the subject of general mediocrity, it would also be wrong to say the Yankees were a mediocre defensive team - they were a truly terrible defensive team, maybe the worst in all of baseball by advanced metrics like total zone fielding runs. If they don't address this deficiency, they won't get to the Series next year either.
Which, as a life-long Yankee hater, suits me just fine.
