This morning radio station WTAG reported that HC is investigating an attack on a student Saturday night. The attack happened between Clark and Brooks-Mulledy.
The report said that the attack was LBGTQ motivated. It also said the victim is reserving emotional and other services. I don't know what emotional and other services entails, but I'm hopeful that it means the victim is not hospitalized.
I checked the website for the Worcester Telegram and did not see any mention of the incident

This is truly sad. I am glad to see the college respond to the incident in an immediate response. I hope the victim of the assault gets any needed help and support both immediately and on an ongoing basis. Squire Maguire would not have been pleased.

Interesting to see that in the last thee years therefore no recorded incidents of hate crimes by HC students. The one reported incident was "intimidation" on campus of a non-student by a non-student. That makes this incident stand out even more.

Where does this rank on the laundry list of embarrassments that have happened at HC under the current president?

Canceling classes, sports practices, etc. for some BS exercise in how to become a professional victim being veiled as creating a “culture of inclusion”?!? What an EMBARRASMENT. Holy Cross was always inclusive, athletes lived in the regular dorms with the rest of the students (a rarity), liberal arts meant majors of all types interacted with one another, there is no Greek system so students weren’t isolated to their frat/sorority, etc. This is no longer the Holy Cross I knew and loved with such passion. It’s just another SJW training ground that won’t see another donation from me anytime soon.
So long as we maintain a true student-athlete focus, I will always be a diehard fan of Holy Cross men’s basketball (call me toxic masculine, I couldn’t care less), but the school itself sadly just doesn’t resonate at all with me anymore.

Father B's overt and dramatic public reaction (replacing afternoon classes/sports for other activities , "which he referred to as “ENGAGE Summit: Where Do We Go From Here?” According to Boroughs, the summit intends to address issues of respect and inclusion on campus.") is well within progressive norms. www.holycross.edu/engage/schedule(The evolving list of programs and meetings scheduled for Friday afternoon - at the above link - certainly captures the scope and focus of campus progressive language, theory, and practice. Gender, race, intersectionality, LGBYQIA+, othering, safe space, cisnormativity, heteronormativity, minoritized, toxic masculinity, queerness, tokenization, trans-identified, diversity, inclusivity, and much more along those very same lines! And not presented as a parody as far as I can tell. A reading of the schedule is enlightening. )

Rumor has it that Austin Butler will be missing the SBU game because some on campus have deemed he is overtly masculine.
(I’m kidding, if you couldn’t tell.)

Funny enough, I was thinking if this would delay the departure of the team...I imagine that even the most progressive president would not make the basketball team stay and attend one of the ENGAGE workshops. Now I am having fun thinking of a progressive workshop SBU would want us to attend prior to or instead of the game.

Just remember when you are mocking this that alums from the class of 1928 likely mocked HC students for the BSU walkout after the GE recruiting protests. We just had a thread about a leader of that group,Ted Wells, getting an honorary degree. crossports.freeforums.net/thread/3223/ted-wells-honoredThese kids view the issues of LGBTQ rights, sexual assault and harassment as important civil rights issues just as students back in the late 1960's viewed race and the war in that same way. I bet those old grumps from the class of 1928 were calling for Father Swords to be fired for giving in to Ted Wells, Art Martin, and their friends.

I sure hope he isn't excluding any groups.

I count 32 different events in each of the first two sessions.
If you have to water this already ridiculous day down into 64 different discussions, what the hell is the point any way? And even if some of the information provides any value, how can you expect anyone to learn anything when they can only attend 2 of the 64 sessions (3%)?
I couldn't help but laugh at some of the ridiculous events/descriptions, particularly this one:
A Walk in Others' Shoes 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Meet at Café Babel, Stein (then walk to Stein 212) Facilitated by: Danilo Antonio Contreras Session Description: The walk: Participants meet at Café Babel. They place their shoes at the center of a circle and wear the shoes belonging to someone they don't know. Participants then walk silently to a meeting space on campus. The workshop: At the meeting space, Stein 212, participants would first reflect on their experience walking in others' shoes. They would then reflect on the extent to which our campus is empathetic, what conditions limit consistent displays of empathy, and what concrete steps we might take individually and as a community to make our campus more empathetic to the different experiences of others.
It's very sad to see what's happened to Holy Cross under Boroughs' watch.

While I'm not sure I agree with the particulars, some of these seminars aren't as horrible as people think they are. I think the seminar entitled "Engaging the Community on the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct" sounds like a pretty good idea right now. What happened to that student last month was wrong. That student was not a professional victim. but an actual victim. I never heard if the culprit was caught or even determined to be part of the HC community. If the perpetrator was not part of the community then the reaction would be silly - kind of preaching to the choir. Now there are alleged reports of all kinds of sexual assaults on campus. If these reports are true and part of the community is assaulting others, maybe there needs to be a little education. Maybe guys need to be taught that date rape is rape. Maybe guys need to learn that it is not honorable to cover for a buddy who has assaulted someone and that a person committing these crimes really isn't deserving of that honor or a true friend. I'm also of the anti-progressive opinion that the whole LBGTQ thing confuses the issue. Assaulting people is wrong, whether that person is from a marginalized group or not. The fact that the most recent victim was LBGTQ does not make this crime any more or less severe to me. We don't need to sit around a campfire sitting Kumbaya. But if there is any truth to the allegations put forth in that website(maybe yes, maybe no - definitely worthy of investigation) some culture change might be in order. I say these things as someone who is leaning more and more to the right. I mock the notion that schools should be "safe spaces" from bad ideas. Schools should be safe places where a student doesn't have to be worried about walking to their dorm late at night. I don't think a lot of these seminars don't address the problem, but IF that website has any truth behind it, there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Just a morning rant from the opposition that normally mocks this stuff. On to Stoneybrook

Having been on campus during the Black Student walkout as many other posters here were as well (and probably at least one poster directly participated), alum is right that the alumni base was upset with how Fr. Swords handled that situation and it wasn't just the old codgers from the Class of 1928 as many younger alums thought it was kowtowing and that the inmates were running the asylum.
I am not a big fan of Fr. Boroughs for his decisions over the last couple of years, but I give him a wide berth here for what he feels is appropriate for the current students.
And all of us should have understood many years ago that this is not the same campus culture that existed when we were on the hill. The world has changed too.

The assault that occurred at HC was uncommon ata college or university, based on statistics compiled by the Department of Education. The reporting of such assaults is compulsory for all two year and four year institutions of higher education. In 2015, nationwide, there were 79 simple assault and 19 aggravated assault incidents reported., nces.ed.gov/programs/crimeindicators/ind_23.aspSuppose a second assault were to occur, that would really elevate HC into the top rank of schools.

No doubt events on campus, progressive and otherwise, elicit varying reactions. Certainly there are varying views (beyond the academic progressive views) on many issues and one hopes all views have a voice on campus. The last thing one wants to see is an attempt to enforce a lockstep progressive orthodoxy.
It remains well within the realm of possibility that Fr. B is overreacting in a 'virtue signaling' sort of way - I would certainly respect and defend the right of anyone to suggest that.
BTW as a student of language and usage I have increasingly noticed the labelling of criticism/commentary/disagreement as the term 'mocking'. Of course I've also noticed that kids state 'going to prom' rather than 'going to the prom' nowadays. So there may be nothing to that.

What does the "+" stand for? I thought it was a typo when I copied it from Fr. B's ENGAGE Summit agenda. I'm wondering if each letter in ENGAGE stands for something since it is all CAPS.
