SBU has defeated both George Washington and South Carolina.. Obviously not going to be the day at the beach some had envisioned.

Which is why I hate making predictions.....those pesky opponents can gum up the works. The ideal outcome for me would be the Saders winning the tournament, while playing Norfolk State in the finals (since we are already playing Siena anyway).

SBU had 22 offensive rebounds vs a Frank Martin USC team Very impressive i would not have wanted to be a USC player in their next practice, or maybe immediately after the game

In the game vs GWU, SBU was down by 22(magic number) before coming back to win in OT

Offensive rebounding and free throws were the difference-makers.

I watched both of SBU's games this year. SBU has a very athletic star (6'6" Yeboah), last year's America East Rookie of the Year (6'5" Olaniyi), an experienced very quick senior point guard (Cornish), and a very talented frosh sharpshooting guard (6'3" Latimer). They've got depth including an intriguing 6'11 JUCO transfer center who can play (and whose silly fouls will doubtlessly drive Coach Boals bananas this year). They were picked T-4th preseason in the AE...but that was before folks got an eyeful of the newcomers. They slashed and dished (and rebounded) on SC and were not out-quicked by any means. We'll have our hands full.

Massey has them as a 3 point favorite. IMO that should be about a 5-6 point favorite. In any case, HC will be the underdog.

The Stony Brook preview...look closely at their "upcoming games" at the bottom. You can see they appear to have chalked this game up as a win.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time ever, the Stony Brook men's basketball team has defeated a Southeast Conference opponent. The Seawolves took down South Carolina 83-81 at the Colonial Life Arena on Friday night. After going into the half up by one, South Carolina scored the first points of the second period before Stony Brook took the lead for good, powered by a 14-6 run. Redshirt junior F Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) scored nine of the points during the run en route to a 14-point second half. The Seawolves kept South Carolina at bay in the final few minutes, making sure a 79-70 lead with 3:10 left stood. Sophomore transfer F Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.) blocked Justin Minaya's left-wing attempt as the horn sounded, securing Stony Brook's second road win in as many games.
HIGHLIGHTS Both offenses started the day cold, with each team combining for eight field goals in the first 10 minutes of the afternoon. A 10-2 Stony Brook run gave the Seawolves the lead with just over five to play in the first half, as sophomore G Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) scored four during the spurt. Nobody had a lead larger than three the rest of the half, with a Yeboah layup at the break putting the Seawolves ahead at the break. After the run made Stony Brook's lead seven with 16:50 to play in the half, South Carolina answered with back to back threes to cut the advantage to one. The Seawolves pulled the momentum back in their favor with senior G Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) scoring six points in a 2:30 stretch to extend the lead to 66-57 with 7:29 left in the second half. Yeboah put Stony Brook back up nine with 5:51 to go before the Gamecocks made their run. A three-pointer at the end cut Stony Brook's lead to 83-81 but the Seawolves defense held them off. NOTES Led by 14 in the second half, Yeboah finished the night with a game-high 24 points, hitting five threes. He also corralled 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the campaign. Olaniyi shot 8-for-10 at the free throw line en route to a 16-point, nine-rebound night. The Seawolves out-rebounded South Carolina 49-33, grabbing 22 offensive boards in the process. A total of five Seawolves finished the night in double figures, with sophomore F Anthony Ochefu (West Chester, Pa.) adding 12 points and redshirt sophomore F Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) and freshman G Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) each compiling 11 points. Cornish added eight points on the night, as well as eight assists and five rebounds. Stony Brook has won its first two games of the regular season for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign, when the program won its first three. The Seawolves came alive from the field in the second half, shooting 18-for-36 (50.0 percent), including 6-for-10 (60 percent) from long range. For the game, Stony Brook shot 19-for-23 from the charity stripe. Stony Brook's defense held South Carolina to 9-for-23 from three-point land. UP NEXT Stony Brook rounds out its Naismath Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament next weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena, facing Holy Cross on Nov. 16 and the winner of Siena and Norfolk State a day later.

SBU fans have cause for optimism in that two of their newcomers (frosh Latimore and transfer sophomore Otchere) were not overmatched v quality opponents this year. If 6'11" Otchere can stay out of foul trouble (he can't), this is a formidable team.

No surprise that this weekend format is baffling for everyone, but if they're planning on a Saturday game then they lost on Friday
Saturday, November 17

If they did lose, why would they be playing the winner of the other game?

SBU's website schedule page has it like this for the following game:
Nov 17 (Sat) - Nov 18 (Sun) Siena/Norfolk State Mohegan Sun Arena TV: ESPN3 / Radio: WUSB 90.1 FM
Gotta say SBU is on quite a roll with their marquee sports (Football last few years, Men's Basketball this season and the Warney years, and Women's Lacrosse last few years) and doing quite well in the minor sports this fall. Moving up the academic rankings too.

If 6'11" Otchere can stay out of foul trouble (he can't), this is a formidable team. Stony Brook was a team that fouled a lot last year (25.5% of its defensive plays), and has continued to do so early on this season (28.6%). Would be nice to see us take advantage of this and get to the line a little more often.

Thus far, HC decisively handled a pretty bad Sacred Heart team at home, They did what they were supposed to do
HC then lost to two P5 teams. Once decisively and once in a competitive game. Sure, we hoped for more, but realistically what was expected. Mid-majors seldom walk into a P5 gym and come out with a win.
Stonybrook is another story. They are a pretty good (per Mr. Massey) mid-major team. This game should be more telling than any of the first three about where this squad really is

Pomeroy has SBU at 191, HC at 198 Bucknell dropped to 209, Colgate up to 179, second in the PL behind Lehigh’s 161 I know, means little this early

They will be tough.

Thus far SBU has looked pretty young and very good this season (it is possible to be both). As I noted before, they were picked T-4th in the AE but they have two talented newcomers who start and it looks like they were a bit underrated.

Anyone happen to know the section number behind the HC bench tonight? If they put the team on the same bench as last time we were here, it would be Section 15.

Anyone happen to know the section number behind the HC bench tonight? If they put the team on the same bench as last time we were here, it would be Section 15. Risky. I don’t want to wind up in the SBU section. I don’t think they’d find the kids as adorable as I do.
