What are the chances of this happening? ! On Tuesday afternoon, I was at Yankee Spirits (largest liquor store in New England) in Sturbridge shopping for wine for our annual family Thanksgiving day dinner. I was talking with a long time friend and employee at Yankee about after dinner wines. All of a sudden this younger guy comes along and says "hi John, you're on Crossports"! Now I know I'm getting up there and don't always immediately recognize people and quickly match a face with a name, but this time I was able to! ! Turns out it was Jon Strack (he of George Kennedy fame) from Durham, North Carolina! ! He flew up (here for 4 days before flying back) and was with mom shopping for her favorite wine. If my memory is correct, his avitar was a NC license plate with his last name. Of course, we spent some time talking HC basketball and how the team was doing. Last time I saw Jon was several years ago at the UNC game in Chapel Hill. Jon is doing well and sends his best wishes to all on Crossports! !

We miss his posts as he was a significant contributor at one time. I periodically drop him a note and encourage him to come back to New England but for some strange reason he likes living in NC and mentions the weather is a little nicer down there.
NAD probably keeps more in touch with him.
I am disappointed that despite the distance that he hasn’t remained active here since we have posters a lot further away than Carolina. I suspect Jon still lurks here.

Jon finds it difficult to pay close attention to HC athletics down there. Last time we spoke, he was kind of lurking around Corssports, but since he's out of the loop, doesn't feel he has much to add as a poster. In all fairness, it's been quite a while since we had any contact
Glad he was able to come home for a few days over the holiday.

Nice to know Yankee Spirits is still going strong; wonder how their prices compare to the new big kid in the area, Total Wine.

Nice to know Yankee Spirits is still going strong; wonder how their prices compare to the new big kid in the area, Total Wine. Total Wine has a very effective business model, based on low advertised prices on key brands/sizes to draw in shoppers who are then subject to a pitch for the retailer's private labels. This works extremely well with wines ("If you like Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay I think you'll really like this XYZ Vineyards Chardonnay and it's $1.00 a bottle less") but not so well with spirits where key brands have more loyal consumers. So Total is happy to advertise a key brand with only, say, an 8% margin in hopes of converting you to their house brand with a 30%+ margin. Total has very well trained sales people. Total will go to France and Italy and buy out entire vineyards on certain wines, making for a "controlled label", a bit different than a "private label". The in-store shopping experience is very positive. When Total came to Louisville, which has great independent liquor stores, it put a very big hurt on some retailers.

David Trone of Total Wine ownership/management is now Congressman-elect Trone out of Montgomery County, MD.....even though there are no Total Wines in MoCo….because the county controls all hard liquor sales...and chain stores can't sell beer/wine...

Getting back to Jon - he's one of my first Crossports buddies, and a great guy. Section F (now I) hasn't quite been the same since he left for warmer pastures. I have a Jon story that I'm sure he won't mind me telling (apologies if I have posted this before): in 2006 we decided to take a ride out to Lewisburg for the PL championship game (we brought Sader Annie along too to meet up with her dad). Well, we get there early, get our tickets and walk into Sjoika Pavilion. Courtside, we saw Hooptime (remember him?) and went over to chat a bit. Soon, its getting closer to game time, and we realize we have to walk around the court to get to our seats behind the HC bench. That meant walking along the baseline in front of the Bucknell students. As we approached in our purple garb, the students started yelling and heckling us. We kept walking, but Jon suddenly stopped (interestingly enough, this was pretty close to what is now known as Champion Corner ). Anyway, Jon turned towards the students, flailed his arms and yelled "YOU'RE GOING DOWN!!!" I think he stunned the kids for a second, then they resumed yelling as we took our seats. Sadly the game didn't go as hoped, but I'll never forget that moment. Fast forward a year, and we are on the floor celebrating with Keith, Torey and everyone else. Then off to Chuck's Steakhouse (with Nadette as well). Good times that make me particularly thankful for this board (and that means you Sader Fan and Dean Wormer!). Thanks for sharing HCFC45!

Jon is very good people. However, with almost every game broadcast on the interweb, he could easily follow HC is he was so inclined. Probably became a Dukie when he moved down there the same way SoCalSader became a Golden Domer when he went to law school there.

I told Mrs. sader1970 about this thread. She remembers well and is a big fan of Jon. She had a perfect observation: "Sounds like a funeral when everyone says nice things about the person but in this case he's still alive to hear all those nice things. Too bad so many people wait until after someone dies to tell them how much they love and appreciate them." BTW, I can't recall if Jon introduced me to NAD or NAD introduced me to Jon. I think the former. On the old board, I posted a picture of Jon, NAD and Ray in the Hart Center when we were able to have pictures, like an album, for lack of a better word. So, Jon, if you read all this, I'll try to fire off an email to you soon. We miss your positivity and upbeat posts on the board! PLEASE COME BACK!!

Probably became a Dukie when he moved down there the same way SoCalSader became a Golden Domer when he went to law school there. In talking with Jon, he told me he really does not like watching the games on the computer and rarely does. He also said that he does not follow the Dukies. He wished that HC would get a few games down in his area over the next few years. He did check the schedule and hoped that we would have had a home game during his 4 day stay but unfortunately we were at Albany.

I recently figured out that I could get Stadium with my Amazon Firestick. Used to connect the computer to the TV with a cord like some sort of dinosaur.
