I'm not sure for WBB. I'm sure it's tough to recruit the best every year, as players stay for the full four years. For example, if you're the top point guard in the country, but UCONN signed the top the prior year, then what, wait 3 years to get your chance? With men, you can expect/predict the studs to leave early to get your shot sooner.

From some reports, Danny Hurley is recruiting well in his first year. He has 2 guard commits. If he can sign one or more of the bigs he is involved with, it will be a good first year.

Geno's team this year is once again not deep and he definitely wanted some of the players he missed on. He has to replace Samuelson and Collier. Their 5 starters all average 29 mins per game or more and there are only 2 subs getting more than 6 minutes per game. Trust me, he was recruiting with immediate playing time to offer. Will be interesting to watch

I don't think UConn needs to be in panic mode yet, but clearly the situation is changing. I think players see that they can get to the next level from lots of schools, not just UConn. All the top schools play on television regularly now so that is not an issue. UConn doesn't sell out all the time any more and the crowds seem to sit on their hands at times. Some may want to play for women coaches. Some might not like his wise ass style. Certainly, the league hurts but they do play a tough OOC schedule every year. This year they are at ND, at Oklahoma, at Cal, at Baylor and hosting South Carolina and DePaul.) With the possible exception of Maya Moore, the kids who have been the biggest hits there have been as cocky as Geno (think Lobo, Bird, Taurasi, Stewart, Samuelson.) He has to keep finding those players.
I do think he will retire before he is 70. I am pretty sure he knows how to enjoy himself outside of the game.

As long as there's the same parity (or lack thereof) in women's college basketball and as long as he's not hindered in who he can schedule out-of-conference (so that he's still playing the best), the answer is "no". The bottom teams in the power conferences are no worse

The AAC is killing UCONN on every level. Think that Tuesday night away game at SMU get them excited?
They were the most screwed program in the country when all the leagues played musical chairs in the last decade.
Their athletic department is in a full panic and they feels screwed, especially by BC who UConn believes kept them out of the ACC.
UConn with an ACC nod ten years ago would be kicking ass and taking names.
On the other hand the luckiest athletic program in all the USA......................................................RUTGERS. They suck but still get the same B1G money as Ohio State.

The worst 1A FB team in the country is what's killing UConn, not BC.
Isn't a decent conference in the country that would take on the dismal FB program, with their prick of a coach. If UConn want's a better conference, shut the FB program down, or go back to 1AA.

Their football team wouldn't suck if they were in the ACC
When they were a Big East football team they beat Notre Dame; at Notre Dame.
They suck because recruits, football and basketball, want their games against big time schools and on TV.
They do not want away at Tulane in front of friends and family.
So 1. Lousy League 2. Fewer good recruits 3. You suck
Wait! I can think of another school who, for different reasons, met the same fate.
Hmm.....three syllables, Papist tradition, previously known, now invisible. Give me a second, I'll think of it.

Anonymous Athletic Conference definitely killing UConn. If no ACC or B1G opportunity in the near future, I’d join the CAA for football and the Big East for all other sports (except hockey).

Agree CAA is much better place for UConn (was, and is for UMass too), as zero shot either the ACC or B1G want anything to do with a FB team not in a top 20 TV market whose only victory was a 7 point win at home over a 6-5 1AA squad.

Agree, back to the Big East For football, assuming they want to remain 1-A, how about forming a new regional FBS 'football only' league. UConn, Umass, Army, Navy (can't believe they're happy in the AAC), Temple, Delaware, JMU, (maybe lure Liberty or ODU from their lousy league affiliations. All of these schools have large enough stadia right now (and oh, by the way HC also does)

AAC is a GREAT Baseball conference so it isn't hurting them on the diamond at all.

Do you mean that no one is coming next year? Even the recruit who has committed already (Aubrey Griffin of Ossining, N.Y.)?

Sure, but not nearly of the usual caliber that UConn gets as the top players have all made commitments - The Griffin girl was no.33 so that alone is a lot lower than they usually get, i.e. top 10 nationally ranked. The fans are now relying on finding grad transfers to supplement the roster for next season, and a good transfer or two.

AAC is probably hurting UConn overall, but I don't think it's that big a deal for the women's hoops. In the world of sports you just can't be the king of the hill forever. The AAC isn't hurting women's hoops any more than the PAC-10 hurt UCLA in the mid 70's

Someone else pointed out yesterday that Geno tended to play his bench sparingly at least while the game was competitive. That may be a factor in this as well.

Isn’t there time for a second, third, fourth recruit ? Yes there is time. But there is no unsigned players that UConn even has recruited at this point. Also, unlike the men, almost all the good women players sign in November. Very slim pickings. He may have to try to add a grad transfer, but transfers have not worked out for them in the past. Too many bad habits, on the court and in practice, to become true UConn players.

Possibly, but that has never been a factor in recruiting until recently. He has rarely played his bench much. UConn plays an unbelievably good OOC schedule, but playing such a dismal conference schedule in January and February has definitely hurt them.
