Certainly if the staff considered him a wash vis-a-vis who they have, they would pass on the kid.
Also, who knows if he was a fit admissions-wise?

Rob, as such a thorough reader of this board I am surprised you don't know the rule - when you step down from fbs to fcs, you are eligible to play immediately. Jon Jon Roberts transferred from Navy to HC and played immediately Haze, thanks for the refresher. I see FBS and FCS as the same division (left-over from decades ago). I appreciate the update.

They may want to go elsewhere but some conference has to first want them. That is their problem. Football drives the bus these days and their program is among the worst in the nation. There are no leagues presently pining to add UConn. They are stuck where they are until the landscape dramatically changes.

Not enough additional coin to help their 40M budget shortfall much. Plus many UConn fans are not happy as this deal will include a lot of ESPN+ games which are internet streamed at a monthly subscription cost. The new tv deal may also mean no games on SNY which would hurt.

Calhoun and Geno built national powerhouses from an unlikely rural town in a small state. Then the game of Conference musical chairs began and when the music stopped they were without a seat.
But UConn is still ahead of HC, at least in Athletic performance. At one point Holy Cross was ahead of UConn in football, MBB, and WBB (briefly under Togo before Geno and C.D. arrived) but we voluntarily pulled over and waved them past us.

One interesting side note- UConn lost one of the top women's recruits last week to Tennessee. This week, Tennessee fired their coach. Maybe Geno will luck out and she'll reconsider.

Horston is #2 in the country and was the MVP of the McDonald’s game. Her switching to UConn would definitely be a good thing for Geno. Tennessee has gotten other very good recruits the last couple of years who could also be in play as transfers. They also have two top 100 bigs signed for this year.

Their women made the final four anyway. At least in the case of that specific program, much whining about nothing

Great win today over Louisville Samuelson was great with 29 points It still remains to be seen if they can turn out a top 10 team next year after losing two 2500 career point players in Katie Lou and Napheesa Collier They only play 6 and have only one recruit signed so far

Don’t they have some HS all Americans on the bench ?

Don’t they have some HS all Americans on the bench ? Not any that Geno thinks are good enough to play any minutes on a team with no depth. He would have only played 5 today except Katie Lou got in foul trouble. We’ll see what the Spring brings for recruits or graduate transfers but, right now, UConn would be borderline Top 10 at best in the preseason polls next year.

But he has often kept Mickey D All Americans on the bench for one or more years in the past.. He has always had a short bench regardless of the bench talent.

Don’t they have some HS all Americans on the bench ? Only one, and she is a project. As HC92 said, they will take a big step back next year barring some unexpected transfer or recruit from Europe.

Time for Geno to retire and spend some time with buddy Martelli ?

Time for Geno to retire and spend some time with buddy Martelli ? Unlikely. He hasn't shown any signs of being ready to pack it in at this point. And he is still doing a great job despite having been dealt a really bad hand in terms of the league they are in. They won't be as good as in the past, but should still be a consistent top ten team. ; UConn's worst team in the last dozen years was FAR better than Martelli's best one. UConn's worst ranking in that time period was 4th. St. Joes best was 45th, and two of their last three were worse than #180.

Auriemma is definitely still working hard on the recruiting trail. Just got a commitment from the #1 ranked 2020 player (both Hoopgurlz and Blue Star), a PG from Minnesota. This quote speaks to Auriemma's work ethic:
"Hopkins coach Brian Cosgriff said Auriemma was the difference-maker in the recruiting process. He showed up countless times at Hopkins High School and in the school's Linbergh Center gymnasium. "It makes a difference when he's showing up for games and other schools are sending their assistant coaches," Cosgriff said.
That helps a lot for 2020, but he needs a lot more. Currently there are only five players combined in next year's freshman, soph, and junior classes. Nine players in total in the four classes for next year. And one of those nine has chronic injuries and another was a D3 recruit who rarely plays but came to UConn because Auriemma liked her intangibles.

I suspect Geno will find some pretty good players either from Tennessee’s incoming class or from overseas or grad transfers who can help next year.

Checked the grad transfer list. Destinee Walker from UNC would be a good one for Geno if healthy. She was highly recruited out of high school and ACC freshman of the year. Only played 21 of 31 games as a Soph. Good shooter and defender. She has battled knee and hip injuries the last two years so health is an unknown. She didn’t play at all two years ago and only played 39 minutes over 4 games this year. Not sure if there’s any way she could get a sixth year and have two years of eligibility left. She was at UNC for four years even though she only really played two seasons plus 4 games this past season.

I suspect Geno will find some pretty good players either from Tennessee’s incoming class or from overseas or grad transfers who can help next year. That may happen. But as you know, Auriemma has been very reluctant to bring in transfers over the years, especially ones he didn't recruit out of HS. And as you know, he is very demanding about character and work ethic. That probably eliminates about 80% of potential recruits early in the process. He may have to loosen his normal standards this year, but I'm sure he is very reluctant to do so. As for Tennessee's incoming recruits, there is one that Geno recruited: Jordan Horston, who is one of the nation's top HS players. I'm sure he'd love to get her to UConn, but the firing of Holly Warlick may not cause any of the UT recruits to change their minds, since she was an incompetent coach. They will be much better with whoever is hired. One other item of note is Tennessee's irrational hatred of UConn, which might preclude them from granting her a release if they thought she was going to head for Storrs.

UT's hatred of UConn is irrational but somewhat understandable as the Huskies supplanted the Vols as the best WBB program in the country.

I think the grad transfers might work for this one year where he needs bodies and maybe could recruit a stud Class in 2020 (with the #1 player already in hand) to help him finish out his career with a couple of more titles between 2021 and 2024.

UT's hatred of UConn is irrational but somewhat understandable as the Huskies supplanted the Vols as the best WBB program in the country. It was largely prompted by irrational behavior from Pat Summit, after UConn had moved well ahead of Tennessee in the pecking order and had kept beating her out for top recruits. Looking back, it may well have been a precursor of her Alzheimers. One example was when they had the SEC submit a list of alleged UConn recruiting violations to the NCAA and demand an investigation and sanctions.. All of the serious violations were ludicrous and untrue. For example, they claimed that Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird had illegally assisted in recruiting Maya Moore and gave examples of them meeting with her. The only problem is that they were both playing pro ball in Russia at the time and had the passport entries to prove it. Tennessee/Summit denied any involvement in pushing for the investigation - until a FOI request showed that the whole thing had been put together by Tennessee.
