HCgrad94,
Perhaps that is a model for HC to follow until the numbers of our hoop fans reach "critical mass."

In the early days of the Centrum/DCU Center I believe HC hosted some sort of 2 day tournament (sponsored by a bank?). In fact, one year I remember it being held at the Hart (South Alabama was one of the teams). As for the Railers, I'm guessing they aren't charging $25+ for tickets? If they are, I'm also guessing they have some sort of family deals available. Worcester County National Bank Classic I still remember the TV ad jingle "What could be more rational? Worcester County National...." Steve Allen actually used to do commercials for that bank too. What can I say? A childhood spent watching (an often fuzzy/snowy) Channel 27....

The commercial played on NESN during today’s women’s game. Looked good. My only critique is that I would have mixed in a few basketball highlights like some Jehyve dunks and blocks.

I guess the anticipated sellout of the DCU Center on Saturday will prove all of us Pawsox in Worcester naysayers wrong.

As mentioned earlier, 1pm start stinks. 7pm Saturday night game would draw better. Ive heard from more than a few people. "Too bad it doesn't start later, I would've gone."

It's hard to see a family in Worcester with young kids spending $100+ on tickets alone (let's not even factor the inflated food and drink prices) to see a HC basketball game at 1:00 on a Saturday.
Shocking that tickets are $22 a pop.
And what's with the early start? It's not like the Railers are playing that night.

As much as I would enjoy a two day tournament it would be better if HC played 3 or 4 games every year @ the DCU Center. That would attract many more fans which would spread out the games. Most local people will not go to the Hart Center as parking stinks and the opposition does not excite the locals.

I think there are just too many options. Every team in the country nearly has a televised game. There are games every night without much rhyme or reason. There are dozens of ESPNs, NESNs, Fox Sports, Big 10 Networks, SEC Networks, SNYs, and the list goes on and on for sports. HC isn't the "only show in town." When you are, you win by default. With thousands of choices for entertainment (Netflix, PS4, AppleTV, Kindle, and so on), HC has to differentiate itself to win the battle for peoples' time. It has to be cheaper, more convenient, more unusual, more entertaining, more interesting, and truly set itself aside. If it can't do that, why would people go? The good people of Central Mass would never support a tournament. Those days are gone locally and somewhat nationally. You think if you brought in some great Mid majors like Davidson, Furman and Loyola IL people would go? No way. You could do that tournament anywhere in New England and nobody would care. The holiday tournaments are mostly a relic of the past, replaced by the endless manufactured (mostly by ESPN) events held mostly in November.

Worcester is foreign place for most Rhode Islanders. Always was and always will be so. Thought those that make the LONG trip could use some suggestions.

The Worcester Railers play their Saturday games at 7:05. Considering that they we smart enough to run circles around HC to secure the DCU Center, I'm assuming they've also done the math and determined that 7:05 is a better start time for attracting families (and everyone else). And how about students? Do you think that having students get to a bus pickup point around 12:00-12:30 on a Saturday is the best way to get them to the DCU Center? Figuring that the HC-URI game would seek to attract locals, students, and alums/fans who will be traveling an hour+ to the game, late afternoon/early evening would be the ideal start time. 1:00 makes little sense however you slice it.

Most local people will not go to the Hart Center as parking stinks and the opposition does not excite the locals. I disagree with the parking logic. For starters, Hart parking is free. Free parking will be a tough find downtown. You need a pretty full Hart when school's in session to have any concerns about parking. Once a year at Winter Homecoming and that's it

Depends on how young. If the kids are old enough to play their own sports in the winter, you’re definitely losing a lot of them with a mid-day start on Saturday. With my brood, I would have a 95% chance of making a 7:00 start each Saturday and a 5% chance of making a 1:00 start. Early start is definitely better for those with long trips and younger kids. Definitely worse for college students and those with kids who play youth sports.

I thought Bill Green played at Penn until he was injured and had to give up the game. He then switched from a Phys Ed major to a History major...one of my best history profs, ever (African History)! I believe he played at Delaware...and I took his African History course, too!

Yeah, Nate Pine's attendance suppression goal is becoming increasingly apparent (Pauses to allow laughter filling the room to die down) There certainly isn't an attendance suppression objective, but two consecutive consecutive Saturdays with 1:00 PM start times suggest a lack of understanding on how to maximize the number of people attending games. I know Nate is infallible and his background in fundraising has him perfectly suited to do anything and everything even remotely connected to athletics, but maybe just maybe this isn't the right approach to take. Then again, the staff that deployed the RSIG Infantry Division to police football tailgates certainly wouldn't make a mistake when it comes to providing the optimal gameday experience. Carry on.

Giving out Bob Cousy bobbleheads to the first 200 fans. I already have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make a new bobblehead giveaway for a game at the Hart when you know the crowd will be smaller!!!!!! Don't tell me they need a bobblehead giveaway to sell this game!

There’s a of noise here about the 1 pm start. Back when HC hoops was relevant, most all the Saturday games tipped off at one, and you couldn’t get a seat in the Hart if you arrived after 1. The traffic stretched from Hogan, down the hill and to the eastbound off ramp of 290. Marv Albert and Bucky Waters made appearances. We have a good product on the floor now. This thread is about a video, which is not a bad thing. Keep winning games and people will come, and the tip off time won’t matter to anyone.

How about we get so good we have enough big opponents coming to the DCU that we play some games in the afternoon and some at night? Maybe even have a weekend men’s/women’s basketball/hockey rumble at the DCU with our hockey east opponents a few times a year. This is to say we get our act together and join men’s HE. The 1 PM works for me but only because the kid’s sports miraculously don’t conflict. Looking forward to it.
