Somebody posted an instgram comment on the score that said Jeez Army calm down, Houston is not isis.
Watched the beginning of the game and Army was scoring, but Houston was moving the ball. I know Houston had the whole D line injured, but still 70 points. Another reason to eliminate some of these bowls.
Happy for Army, they are a great team.

Definitely -- you should have to be the conference champ from the Sun Belch, C-USA or MAC to be playing in a bowl game. To have 3-4 teams from each of these leagues participating makes the whole system more meaningless.
It wasn't that long ago that you had to win the MAC Championship to get a bid to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit to face a Big Ten team -- the loser went home. That's the way it should be, unless of course the MAC champ is so accomplished that they deserve to play in a higher game.
Twenty years ago, when Army had their last 10-win team before this year, they played Auburn in the Independence Bowl, a bowl game with a long lineage. This year, they played a mediocre AAC opponent at TCU's stadium. This is what happens when the system becomes oversaturated with 6-6 teams from the G5.

Couldn't agree more.....some people complain about there being too many schools in March Madness, when only around 20% of the schools get in. What's it here - 50%?

Those of us who like to place a friendly wager or two at times like all the bowl games. There's nothing wrong with more football.

They are program filler for ESPN during the holiday season otherwise they would all be gone. And I don't think that an 8 team playoff will change that much.

Probably not so much for the random games in Albuquerque, Boise and Mobile. No doubt some of the bowl games are well attended and viewed and some bowl games are not so well attended and not so well viewed. There is a pretty random bowl game today, SERVPRO First Responder Bowl in Dallas, pitting the runner-up team in the Mountain West Conference (Boise State, 10-3) v the 4th Place team in the ACC Atlantic Division ( Boston College, 7-5). The game has averaged about 36K over the last ten years and it is nationally televised - will be interested in seeing how many fans actually attend the 1:30 game. (I think that teams who are good enough to get invited to a bowl game are generally very eager to attend. Their fans tend to feel the same way - whether that translates into long distance fan travel v enthusiastic couch/pub viewing is another matter. )

Only 4 teams were invited to the FBS playoffs this year. NCAA Hoops tournament starts with about 65 teams (and many play several games within the tournament) It is true that many FBS football teams are invited to participate in many different post-season bowl games...many basketball teams are invited to play in many different post-season tournaments/playoffs (NIT - 32 teams, CBI - 16 teams...last year Colgate lost a close one to San Francisco in the opening round, CIT - 16 teams) . Additionally - and to the extent it matters - the various basketball post-season tournaments, of course, involve many games.

That number today will be lucky to exceed 1,600. Our former rival's fans are smart enough, despite what some of us say about them; to figure out when a trip to a bowl game is worth it or not; no way this year's team is worth it the way things played out. It might be a nice take for Boise State, however. The years that there was no team remotely close to Dallas, the attendance has been 20K, I would expect that to be about the number today.

One of the not so secret, secrets is the additional practice time a bowl game gives to these programs.

BC's bowl game vs. Boise St. was just cancelled in Dallas because of persistent thunder showers. Eagles were leading 7-0 in the 1st qtr. Crazy !

Don't know if this is true or not, but one of the Globe comments stated that as a makeup, BC will be invited to the Toilet Bowl in Flushing, NY

57K at the Music City Bowl, guess it was reasonably close for Auburn and Purdue.
Even more surprising was 51K at Houston for Baylor & Vandy, two 6-6 teams. Guess Baylor football didn't get killed as bad as SMU did back in the day.

Why is drawing a strong crowd surprising for a BXII school with a large following in Texas playing just ~150 miles from campus?
