www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25674974/tickets-cfp-title-game-less-expensive-beforeMonday night, probably a 9 PM start or something like that, west coast time zone with both teams on the east coast, playing the game on a neutral site almost 3,000 miles away from campus... Bay Area traffic and hotels, flight prices jacked up... it's almost like no one thought of these things! They try too much to market these like professional events (student-athletes, above all!) but are tone deaf to reality.

Considering the megabucks in this deal are from TV rights and all the tickets were sold anyway, no one directly connected with the game is lamenting anything. It's the speculators that are losing money and/or not getting as much as they figured.
That's assuming of course the original sale of tickets was done fairly.

the NCAA has nothing to do with any of this! 100% correct. The College Football Playoff is operated independently by all of the FBS conferences and independents.

Okay then you can delete-- still dumb, IMO. It's a calculated risk. With the Pac-12 and the MWC part of the consortium that runs this thing, you can't ignore the West Coast as a venue (LA is going to host in a few years). There's always a chance you will have two teams not within driving distance of the venue. It happens. The organizers are banking on people spending money to fly to the game because it's the national championship and people will find a way if they really want to go. An event of this magnitude, you can't really just say they're going to play it at the campus of the highest seed. You're talking about hotels needing to accommodate massive travel parties, the influx of fans and media. They are definitely handling it like a professional event, but it's magnitude requires that.

In January 2002, Miami and Nebraska played for the BCS national championship at the Rose Bowl. Certainly not unprecedented.
The CFP championship will rotate through the same collection of venues as the Super Bowl. Warm weather NFL stadiums, classic New Years Bowl sites and whatever cold-weather cities have indoor or retractable-roof stadiums (Indy, Minneapolis, Houston etc.)

I think the possibility of 8 teams does have to take attendance/travel into account. 3 rounds means 3 trips (and the same number of trips as basketball, but in basketball usually only the Final 4 is played in a football stadium);and for most people that's going to the well once too many times. You have to make sure that there are lot of sales that don't involve the participants.
Now if they had done this a generation or two ago there would have been no league championship games; the first round would be more or less when those games are played; and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Except for Los Angeles, the others are drivable for Alabama fans.

Assuming the game is at the new LA stadium; it's supposed to be spectactular; and it will be only a couple years old- so I would think that game will have no problem with attendance.
Plus, sooner or later someone from the left coast will have a team in the game.
