Since we are always looking ahead... There is a freshman at my former school who is attracting a lot of attention! He played for St. Peter Marian in Worcester last year... Don't know why he is back at Algonquin this year... His name is Alex Karaban. He is 6' 7"! He's getting a lot of ink in the papers! Algonquin is ranked number 3 in the area and just trounced Westboro at number 4. Algonquin (in Northborough) had another player we tried to get a couple of years ago - A.J. Brodeur - who ended up at U Penn. Maybe the coaching staff should take a look...

He played high school ball as an 8th grader at SPM, I assume (you can do that at so-called jr-sr high schools in Mass.), isn't repeating a grade?
One thing about taller kids is that they do seem to end up at prep schools at some point; probably because they are assured of playing against similarly bigger kids. Chris Doherty at Marlborough was kind of an outlier these days. Hope he stays at The Gonk and AAU ball is enough for him.

One of the St. John's freshmen is the nephew of former Westborough HS star and BC quarterback Mike Power. I assume the kid you're talking about is TJ Power. I haven't seen him play basketball, but he is (was?) also a helluva baseball player. In the summer of 2016, at 12U, my son's team came out of the field of 100+ teams and made it to the championship game at Cooperstown Dreams Park. They faced a team called the Eastern Mass All Stars, literally an all star team of kids from all over New England formed just for that tournament. On the mound that game was a 6'4" lefty named TJ Power from Shrewsbury (we all wondered if he was actually 12). He threw about 80 mph from 50 feet away and, even scarier, first time through the lineup I think he went first pitch slider to each batter. Our kids had never seen anything like it. We had one kid come back to the dugout after an at bat who fouled off a couple pitches. He had two dents in his bat. Needless to say, we did not win that game. Just looked at his Perfect Game profile and it doesn't even look like he's playing high level baseball anymore. Probably dropped baseball for the AAU circuit -- too bad so many kids specialize these days. I should probably apologize for digressing........

Word is he will be playing baseball for the Pioneers this spring. Things can change.

T&G says Power is 6-6; was Mike Power close to that? The only tall BC quarterback I remember was Shawn Halloran. I went to a clinic once that had Halloran and Bill Romanowski there. Both were still at BC at the time. I thought Halloran was the linebacker and vice-versa. Must have been before Romanowski bulked up (I won't comment on how).

Dirtiest player in NFL history, according to some. Maybe Monte Stickles and Conrad Dobler could put up a weak argument against...

Alex Karaban has nice tools, handles the ball well, can shoot from deep, decent ups. But the one thing that jumped out at me was his blocking a 3, and then controlling the ball. He looked up court with the ball still over his head and ready to pass!! He was in good balance and was seeing the court..Tough to teach that kind of basketball skills! HCFC45, you better start breaking out all those old contacts, get the kid signed!!

I'd bet any contacts he had are all "dried up".... Still have a couple left, but one of them is associated with that other institution on the other end of the mass pike! ! Anyway, here is a link to last night's game at Algonquin vs Catholic Memorial (they defeated Algonquin early in the season). Algonquin got it's revenge and defeated the Knights! www.telegram.com/sports/20190117/boys-basketball-freshman-alex-karabans-big-night-sends-algonquin-past-catholic-memorialAlex Karaban, the 6' 7" freshman, had 35 points and 20 rebounds! ! Algonquin is scheduled to play at St. John's on Sunday at 3:00pm. Would be a great game to go to and a sure SRO! With the weather reports indicating a major snowstorm hitting the Worcester area this game is sure to be postponed!

Weather I'm seeing is Saturday night into Sunday morning. 14" or so coming to the city, but over a few hours prior to tip off. Of course all the players on both teams will want to be home shoveling out their parents' driveways

Got to see the Central Mass Championship game last night at Worcester State University between Acton-Boxborough and Algonquin. A-B beat Algonquin 53 - 41. Alex Karaban, the Freshman, 6' 7" had 13 points on 5 - 14 shooting with 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. This is the first time I have seen him play.He has a nice shot, quick release and can shoot. Think he made 3 from beyond the arc. Overall, Algonquin did not shoot the ball well at all. See the link below. They took 33 shots from beyond the arc. Thought I was at a PL game! I don't understand it!!! They would come down and one pass maybe two and jack up a 3! Shots were not falling! Only sporadically did they attack A-B's defense and go to the rim. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that A-B's players had a height advantage over Algonquin. A-B had two players, a soph at 6'7" and a junior at 6' 8". Karaban was always out beyond the arc and rarely ventured inside the paint. He is not quick and fast afoot, and seemed slow on defense while he was guarding one of the A-B guards. You have to remember, he is a young kid, Freshman,in a 6' 7" body! One descriptive term that came to my mind is that he is a "floater", a smooth one! www.telegram.com/news/20190308/d1-central-boys-basketball-acton-boxboro-stops-algonquin-to-claim-titleOn a side note, the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) scheduled the Boys Division 1 final for 6:00pm and the Girls Division 1 final for 8:00pm. Those attending the first game were asked to leave through the exits opposite where we came in to allow those coming in for the Girls Divison 1 game to enter without people going out the same way. Don't think they cleared the gym before the Girls game. However, this situation created a massive jam in the parking lot! You got lots of people trying to leave and lots of people trying to come in! Took me a half hour sitting in gridlock to get off the campus!!!

Probably needs to use his size more inside. I have heard that he is a 17 year old freshman. Worcester State traffic Haha. While I don't sit in traffic, I struggle to find a place to park there.

If they have multiple games at Holy Cross next week, hope the crowd/traffic control is a little smahtah! Other than that, love the WSU facility.
The girls game was a thriller, won at the buzzer by Franklin. Franklin's best player's dad played for Norwood HS, BU, then GW after Mike Jarvis left BU to go there. She's going to GW as well. Ali Brigham, daughter of Bill Brigham.

In my post regarding the A-B / Algonquin game I forgot to mention the following....
With about 30 seconds left in the game and A-B up by 12, Algonquin emptied their bench and put 5 guys in who had not played in this game. When the ball was inbounded by A-B I noticed that the A-B coach left his 5 starters in the game! He did not give some of the bench players a chance to be on the court during the last 1/2 minute! Granted he is a first year coach at A-B but this left me shaking my head!
