Got to see the Central Mass Championship game last night at Worcester State University between Acton-Boxborough and Algonquin. A-B beat Algonquin 53 - 41. Alex Karaban, the Freshman, 6' 7" had 13 points on 5 - 14 shooting with 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. This is the first time I have seen him play.He has a nice shot, quick release and can shoot. Think he made 3 from beyond the arc. Overall, Algonquin did not shoot the ball well at all. See the link below. They took 33 shots from beyond the arc. Thought I was at a PL game! I don't understand it!!! They would come down and one pass maybe two and jack up a 3! Shots were not falling! Only sporadically did they attack A-B's defense and go to the rim. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that A-B's players had a height advantage over Algonquin. A-B had two players, a soph at 6'7" and a junior at 6' 8". Karaban was always out beyond the arc and rarely ventured inside the paint. He is not quick and fast afoot, and seemed slow on defense while he was guarding one of the A-B guards. You have to remember, he is a young kid, Freshman,in a 6' 7" body! One descriptive term that came to my mind is that he is a "floater", a smooth one! www.telegram.com/news/20190308/d1-central-boys-basketball-acton-boxboro-stops-algonquin-to-claim-titleOn a side note, the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) scheduled the Boys Division 1 final for 6:00pm and the Girls Division 1 final for 8:00pm. Those attending the first game were asked to leave through the exits opposite where we came in to allow those coming in for the Girls Divison 1 game to enter without people going out the same way. Don't think they cleared the gym before the Girls game. However, this situation created a massive jam in the parking lot! You got lots of people trying to leave and lots of people trying to come in! Took me a half hour sitting in gridlock to get off the campus!!! For years the CMass Boys D1 was a stand-alone on a Friday night. Always a huge crowd and a buzz in the city about the game. When they went to four divisions (for some stupid reason) they started playing D1 as a double header with the boys playing first. Makes no sense MIAA could screw up a one-car funeral.

The MIAA finally got the state balanced..Eastern Mass always had 4 divisions, now the whole state has 4..The Eastern's North/South D-4 final was considered the State Championship. When Eastern Mass had 4 divisions and Central/western had 3, there was a huge difference in the size of the schools playing in D-2 and D-3 for the State title..The school I was at, Quaboag Regional, played in the State Final (girls) for something like 6 times in an 8 year period...The schools we played were always about twice the size of us..We had about 150 girls and were playing schools that had about 300, that was D-3. Now Quaboag is in D-4, playing schools of comparable size..(Divisions are by enrollment, girls and boys separately.) That makes a huge difference..The State Redistricted everybody to again balance the Districts.. So now there are 2 more games in the schedule to be played..they start with the 2 D-1's on Friday and play 6 games on Saturday, the first starts at 10 am...

Bump- Karaban, according to the Metro West Daily News, will be attending New Hampton next year.
Typical path for bigs is to go to a prep school, 17 years old (according to some poster; which would make him ineligible to play hs ball in Mass his senior year) or not.

Probably needs to use his size more inside. I have heard that he is a 17 year old freshman. Worcester State traffic Haha. While I don't sit in traffic, I struggle to find a place to park there. Karaban is legit. He turned 16 in November. www.indilocker.com/user/alex_karaban_832
