One of my favorite players when I was growing up, also Clemente and Mays. RIP.

One of the true greats of all-time. I'll always remember him coming to the American League in 1966 and winning the triple crown for that great OPrioles teams.
He went to famous McClymonds High School which also produced Bill Russell and Vada Pinson and a number of other noted athletes.

True, But do not forget that the great Orioles team of ‘69 (109-53, 3-0 ALCS) lost to some big underdog National Leagus squad.in the World Series.in 5 games.

That was one of the great upsets in baseball history as the Orioles were by far the better team. I'd say the Orioles had the better overall player in 7 of 8 positions (Cleon Jones had a better season than Don Buford) and had a tremendous defensive team . During the regular season the Mets outscored their opponents 632-541 while the Orioles outscored theirs 779-517. Pitching was about even. Can you imagine how cocky the Orioles were after beating Tom Seaver in Game 1? Then they batted .133 in the remaining four games as the Mets pitching was sensational.

Ah, yes. Good memories. I used to tell friends back then that I supported the Mets because I always liked minor league sports.

I remember it so well. j was there for game 5. Participated in a champagne toast when Cleon caressed Davey Johnson’s( eventually ironic) fly ball.

Good thing Cabrera won the Triple Crown in 2012. This leaves Yastrzemsmki and Cabrera as the only living Triple Crown winners.
#4 on the all time home run list for long, long time - right up until the steroid era. Still #10 with no one in sight looking to knock him out. Only guy I can think of to win MVP in both leagues

Yeah, I used to razz the Bostonians that they needed a Long Islander to have a halfway decent team. P.S. as hoops knows, just about all those potato farms are now vineyards. Presumably more lucrative.

Tom, while I don't follow baseball, at least not MLB, anymore, according to the news the only reason you can't think of anyone else winning MVP in both leagues is because there was no one else.

Just heard this one today--- Frank Robinson was the starting center on the McClymonds High School basketball team, ahead of Bill Russell, who was a late-developing reserve who did not start until he was a senior.
