The Globe is soliciting suggestions for a nickname for the Worcester Red Sox. One guy suggested "Redmen Crusaders". Do you think it will fly?

Hey, it is no business of any GD Boston newspaper to stick its nose into a Worcester baseball team! Now, if the T&G asked the same question, nd would be spot on.

BTW, I suspect our non-alum ND poster forgot to tell us that he was the wag who made the suggestion to the Globe.

Someone also suggested the “Wed Sox” in honor of Bob Cousy.

BTW, I suspect our non-alum ND poster forgot to tell us that he was the wag who made the suggestion to the Globe. Not that witty, I'm afraid. I suggested the boring but accurate Heart-Sox (Worcester being the "heart" of the Commonwealth).

Ruby Legs is cute and historically significant. Although Rubes, which is what it would get shortened to, is not exactly a term of endearment.

They will most certainly be the "WooSox".....what else could they be known as really? Everybody is assuming the Worcester Red Sox. If so it will likely be informally shortened to Woo Sox. Doesn't have to be "Red Sox" The Sox AA affiliate are the Sea Dogs. The A affiliate in Lowell are the Spinners. Using the name Red Sox helps with marketing but not mandatory. Pawtucket and Syracuse are the only teams in the International League to carry the name of the parent organization. Using the Red Sox name is safer than going a different way. The last pro team baseball team in Worcester was the independent Tornadoes. When that team formed, there were people upset at the name because people died during the tornado. If they pick a new name, somebody will have a problem with it. I can't imagine anyone putting up a stink about the name Red Sox

Actually, lots of the traditional Italians on Shrewsbury St are still Yankee fans. They're just following what their fathers did and many Italians of prior generations felt a kinship to the Yankees with players like DiMaggio and Rizzuto. Being a total homer and slightly obnoxious, I like to remind those Yankee fans that DiMaggio isn't playing center field anymore - and in fact he's dead

Maybe they should retain the name "PawSox," you know, for the sake of tradition. What do you think rf1?

Providence (with its large Italian pop.) was also Yankee Country to a degree for many years as well... which spilled ovah into SE Mass somewhat. I remembah Yankee games being broadcast on a Fall Rivah AM station well into the late 1970s, early 1980s.
Like many New York football Giant fans in this area, that generation has passed on to a great extent.
