Collins is benefitting from the work that Carmody did to take Northwestern out of rock bottom in the Big 10 and thereby bring Northwestern into the consideration pool of better student-athletes. Carmody brought Northwestern part of the way, enabling Collins to start at a higher point. Compare this to Columbia Football under Al Bagnoli: instead of going the customary 1-9 or 0-10 every year as Columbia did for so long, Bagnoli now has Columbia at a place of decency. Bagnoli's successor will have a much easier job than he did, just as Collins has it easier than Carmody did at Northwestern Also worth noting is that Mr. Collins is playing in a facility that re-opened in November after a $110mm facelift. His team finished dead last in the Big10 this year and was ousted in the first round of the Big10 tournament. His team that made the NCAA tournament included two key reserves who were Carmody recruits--Taphorn (who threw a length of the court pass to beat Michigan in a late season game) and Lumpkin. So is Chris Colllins a poor coach? Is the AD who hired him a rube? Or is it very difficult for a high academic, high integrity program like NU to win in Big 10 hoops? I'll take what's behind Door Number 3, Monte

So is Chris Colllins a poor coach? Is the AD who hired him a rube? Or is it very difficult for a high academic, high integrity program like NU to win in Big 10 hoops? Northwestern is a very tough job, and Carmody was not skilled enough to actually get them over the hump. You can make all the excuses in the world, but the reality is that he has now gone 17 consecutive seasons without a conference record over .500. At some point, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s actually a very average coach. (Another very difficult job is Seton Hall. Unlike Carmody at NW, Kevin Willard has actually been able to get the job done there. They have now won 20+ games four seasons in a row for the first time in school history. If you gave Kevin Willard 13 years at Northwestern, there is very little chance that the results would be as poor as they were under Carmody.)

Mike Dunleavy fired this morning by Tulane. Brutal season this year: 4-27, including the oh-fer: 0-18-in AAC play. Three-year record of 24-69.

Kevin Willard has not had to recruit students, just athletes. He has done a great job with those athletes.

Comparison of the recruits on the Seton Hall, Marquette (team they beat last night, and Villanova (team they play tonight) rosters: 5 stars: Nova: 1 Marquette: 0 Hall: 0 4 stars: Nova: 5 Marquette: 5 Hall: 2 Top 150: Nova: 6 Marquette: 7 Hall: 2 While he has not had to worry about getting kids into school, Seton Hall can’t even come close to the teams at the top of the Big East in recruiting.

My beef with KWillard is his hiring of the NYC cheat Tiny Morton to get Isaiah Whitehead.and his teammates.

My beef with KWillard is his hiring of the NYC cheat Tiny Morton to get Isaiah Whitehead.and his teammates. A friend of mine is the head coach at Fordham Prep. It was a pleasure to see him beat Tiny in the NYC Class A Semis this year. On a banked three pointer from his senior PG from 30 feet out.

Morton’s reward for being fired from Lincoln for cheating was a job at the Catholic league’s Nazareth, Kevin Greaney’s school.

Pitino and Fordham a better match IMO No opening at Fordham, Their AD came out saying that they will retain Neubauer after there had been unsubstantiated reports of a change.

Pitino and Fordham a better match IMO Ego issue: RP would likely not work for what Fordham is willing to pay, i.e. to drop from a Top-5 $$$ coach to #100 or lower. UNLV could find some casino mogul to pony up $5 or $8 MM.....

Tony Shaver out at William & Mary. Despite not being able to crack the glass ceiling and make NCAAs, hes been most successful coach there since 1980 BY A LANDSLIDE.
The College bought out 1.7Million remaining on Shavers deal. Whispers of Kennedy from A&M coming to town (connection to AD) or JTIII.

Pitino and Fordham a better match IMO It would be a prefect fit for the 25 year plan that showed upgrading from Patriot League to A-10 would translate to wins on the basketball court

Jeff Goodman tweets that alum Bryan Mullins will be the next coach at So.Ill. I believe he played against HC when we danced under RW.

one of the best m-2-m defenses I've witnessed in person.....they were so tough. My guess is he will bring that back to the Salukis.

St. Joseph's fires Phil Martelli. It was probably time for them to move on, but I would have figured they would have couched it by calling it a "retirement" unless he was unwilling to step down. No doubt he has a TV gig or two waiting for him if wants to go that route,

He was a terror guarding Torey Thomas all 94 feet up and down the court in Columbus. His winning pedigree (both as a player at SIU, and on the staff at Loyola Chicago), toughness, and defensive mindset would have made him an awesome candidate for HC.

Most of Martelli's long time friends and supporters in the administration were no longer still there. New AD came on in the last year. Program had registered multiple poor seasons and interest was waning. School has steadily been losing local traction in the Philly Big-5 and was now being much more compared to LaSalle than to Villanova or Temple.
