HC had political clout back when I-290 was being designed as the MA State House was crawling with alums and legend has it the infamous S curves were put in to save Fitton Field. I have no way to verify that old tale, however.

I heard that it was more about money than political clout. They had wanted to run it through Fitton and within a few feet of a lab building (which would have effectively prevented its use for any science labs). The Cross challenged the money offered and it was determined the "corrected" reimbursemen for what Mass wanted made the slower route prohibitively expensive.

Ed Hanify represented the College.

Is the Hanify lecture named after him? Yes. Can anyone name some of the notable speakers from that series? I will start with Adam Ulam. A Sovietologist at Harvard, and at the time Henry Kissinger’s chief rival regarding the academic discipline. On the HC faculty, we now have a nationally recognized Sovietologist in Prof Cynthia Hooper.

Very impressive list, the honorarium must be equally impressive. The lecture usually gets positive news coverage.

Is the lab building being referenced the old observatory? No. That was a great little observatory. It was over just above the Jesuit residence (now a dorm). it can still be seen in old aerial campus photos.

AOC attended the highly regarded Yorktown High School and is a BU graduate. I thought Presley attended - but did not graduate from- BU.

Pressly dropped out of BU. The highly regarded incumbent graduated from Dartmouth and I think BC Law, but she smoked him in a left leaning wave similar to the Contract with America wave a generation ago.

The Hanify Howland series really has had some great speakers. In my years, the speakers were Doris Kearns Goodwin, Lester Thurow, Joe Califano, and Sarge Shriver. Goodwin is obviously a major American Presidential historian, Thurow was at the time one of the most important economists in the country and Califano, an alumnus, and Shriver, a member of a family with close HC ties were all good "gets." My father, a BC grad, was a real believer in and supporter of the Kennedy/Johnson civil rights and war on poverty initiatives. I remember him being so pleased that I had the chance to participate in the small group session with Shriver the day after the address. I have read Califano's autobiography and the Stossel book on Shriver. While neither was perfect, they both lived lives for others. Shriver spoke the day that RFK's son David had been found dead of a drug overdose in Palm Beach. He did a brief question and answer session with television crews right after the speech. The text of Shriver's speech can be found here. www.sargentshriver.org/speech-article/address-at-holy-cross-college-hanify-howland-lecture

History has shown you don't want to be that close to the highway. There's a church in Worcester (Our Lady of Mt Carmel) that has been deemed structurally unsound supposedly because the old building couldn't stand the vibrations etc from being so close to I-290
