goholycross.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33100&ATCLID=211706331Why is Murphy still the OC on the website going into Spring Ball? Let us Review: -Terrible offensive production throughout the 2018 season -Inability to Game Plan or Adjust IN ANY GAME LAST YEAR (if people want to claim Yale (big stretch), he didn't game plan well." -No Resume. I have a better coaching resume and have never coached a day in my life. This guy has absolutely no business at the FCS level Murphy at St Anselm: 2008: 2-8 2009: 2-8 2010: 2-8 2011: 1-9 2012: 2-9 2013: 1-10 2014: 6-5 2015: 3-8 Head Coaching Record at St Anselm..... Drum Roll.......: 19-65 I am hoping it's just a mistake on the website. Murphy is a stretch for the high school level in the state of Massachusetts and we need to go in a different direction to succeed in 2019.

Express your concern to Chesney, then. Life's too short to start a debate about the Holy Cross Offensive Coordinator in March for most folks.

Point taken Same is true for the position of QB. Even the casual fan knows these are two very critical areas right now as the guys prepare to start spring camp. If these are not two discussion points for a March 12th message board thread, what is? We may all just as well shut up until Navy then. Personally, I’m looking forward to any tidbits of info on how the QBs and the offense in general look during live periods. There’s not a cupcake on our schedule in the Fall. As legit of an FCS lineup as there is.

Um, our 4 game end of season win streak, while nice, came against 4 of the weakest teams D1 teams in the country. A fifth, Bucknell, was even weaker than those 4 but managed to upset us for their only win of the season. Our OOC schedule is very, very challenging. Our league schedule, not so much.

The very tough OOC schedule is basically half our games, we barely beat Georgetown, Lehigh is going to have blood in their eyes for us, Colgate will be great again, and you have to think the others will improve. From the perspective of HC football, there are no cupcakes on the schedule.

Here's our recent strength of schedule per Sagarin
2015= #215 of 256 schools. Subtract 121 FBS schools and figure HC's schedule was #94 of 135 FCS schools 2016= #205 2017= #195 2018= #196
We have 8 opponents in common with 2018, and we can't tell whether Harvard or Yale or Bucknell will be stronger or weaker in 2019 than in 2018. Still, it's interesting to make the obvious comparison between the schools leaving the schedule and those joining it:
2018 Opponents leaving
boston college= # 38 Dartmouth= # 114
2019 New opponents
Navy= #107 Syracuse= #28 Brown= #234
Believe it or not, Sagarin says that Dartmouth and Navy are about equal and the same holds true for bc and Syracuse. If you accept that logic, we have added a 12th game against #234 Brown...……….

Last year's OOC was very tough....no offense to the Big Green, who were very, very good last year...but a game at Annapolis trumps Dartmouth at Fitton imo.
What's particularly tough with next year's sked is that the 1st 5 of 6 tilts are on the road and the one home game during this stretch is UNH.
I could see us winning the PL but going like 1-5 or 2-4 OOC next season.

That may prove to be realistic, but I am not one to sell this coach and these players short so early on.

I doubt it would happen, but there is not a game on the schedule we can't lose. The outcome of the IC games, more than ever, is going to be determined on how we emerge from the OCC as it relates to team morale (hopefully high with Chesney), health (maximizing strength and conditioning and smart play calling), and experience (question mark). Games against opponents like Syracuse and Navy could be great for sharpening one's teeth, but if they are completely one-sided, the only good they bring is money for the college and a chance for the guys to play in front of a large FBS audience. In particular it is going to be extremely challenging for a new quarterback to gain his footing with a schedule that starts off like ours does. It will be interesting to see what a good coach does in the Spring and pre-season to mitigate this effect and prepare his legions well enough to compete and grow through this kind of adversity.

It does look like the FBS games might not do much in terms of QB/OC development - Chesney is not an idiot and is going to work the clock rather than throwing the ball all over the place (as he wisely did in the blowout exhibition v BC last year).
That is too bad as I'd like to see the QB and OC clicking heading into the softer part of our schedule. In any case, if we have a QB and are otherwise healthy, the PL games are winnable as are the IL games.

Exactly, in its worst iteration, run for no gain on 1st, run for no gain on 2nd, incomplete/intercepted pass on 3rd, punt on 4th doesn't help anyone offensively, least of all a green QB. Defense will get some good experience until they are worn down, then it becomes a real risk of injury.
The UConn game 2 years ago was an example of a best case scenario FBS game - great experience, competitive game (robbed of a win by the refs), and the last FBS game before that one (Army) was an actual win for HC.

I think these are very different games (Navy vs BC) I think we would actually have more success throwing the ball vs Navy than a run heavy attack. Navy will run the ball so much they will do a pretty good job of keeping the clock going - So if we're going to have a chance we need to come out with much more balanced attack. Our defense will have to play MUCH more disciplined than it did last year in order to have a shot against the option.

HC +3 vs UNH
HC + 6 at Yale HC + 37 at Syracuse
HC (16) at Brown
HC +2 versus Harvard

In 2006, we were 7-4 and took 693 defensive snaps (averaged in the 600's in the more competitive years at HC). In 2018, we were 5-6 and took 820 Defensive Snaps. Holy Cross hasn't seen that many snaps on the defensive side of the ball since 2003 when we were 1-11.
The OC needs to be gone and we need to find another option at the QB position. There is no "other side" of the argument. Murphy is proven loser and we will not succeed with him calling plays in 2019.

Which QB is going to be the Navy scout team QB during the pre-season practices? If the coaches have traveled to Cincinnati to get pointers on defending against Navy's offense, a QB who can emulate Navy's offense in practice is surely needed. And would not such a QB be someone who can run a RPO offense?

And would not such a QB be someone who can run a RPO offense? Interesting question as we may not have an RPO QB in the stable. This is one of the many subtle challenges for which a good coach like Chesney should be able to find a creative solution. I can think of several possibilities but defensive prep is not an area I feel qualified to render a public opinion. Sure is cool to be arm chair strategizing how HC should play The Navy in football though.

"Interesting question as we may not have an RPO QB in the stable." - Didn't stop us from trying to run it last year.
Typically if you don't have that QB in your stable for scout team you grab a wideout or rb to run it on scout team.

True but as it relates to preparation, its 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Point is we don't have a QB who fits either mold, and agree we'd probably bring a non-QB in to run the scout. Very important.

Since 1999 Saint Anslem's has had 1 winning record (and two 5-5 records). Guess who was the coach that eeked out a winning record there? In fact, Saint A's stopped playing football after WWII only to bring it back in 1999 -- so to cherry pick a coach's record from an abysmal "football school" to further your (weak) argument is laughable. So....drum roll....why don't you tell us why you really don't like Murphy? goholycross.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33100&ATCLID=211706331Why is Murphy still the OC on the website going into Spring Ball? Welcome, cross99. I am in the wait-and-see camp re: Coach Murphy as I think a silent majority here also is. As you seem pro-Murphy, any experience you have with him or other thoughts on why he’s the right guy would be much appreciated. Thanks.
