Headed up now, 4 games: 2 girl's, 2 boy's games. A guy I coached under is being awarded at halftime of the 2 o'clock game. I'll be curious how well HC and the MIAA handle this

Games are at WPI today also. HC is a better set up for highway access and parking as long as they don't book a conference in Hogan for the same day. Good to see the Hart generate some revenue. The heating bill alone for the Luth complex must be huge.

Trek up to the Hart is a good cardiovascular workout. No ice or snow today. Pity the grandparents attending, however.

Parking for Harrington at WPI is much improved since they built the parking garage behind it that has the playing fields on top of it and runs along Park Ave. Entrance road is from Salisbury Street by the church near the corner.

'87, thoughts on how the day went? It seemed to go pretty well but truth be told only attended the end the first game, my HS alma mater lost and through the half of the 2nd game when the coach I worked with was awarded. Was able to pahhk near Hart/Luth...decent but not overflowing crowds for the games I attended. Good day for HC it seemed...the Stang/HC post-game reception in Hogan was short-lived though ala the Cocoanut Grove aftah the loss to Dover-Sherborn....Pub was closed too

WPI drew the long straw as they got to host the Worcester Tech "home" tournament final vs Abington for the Division 4 final. If that reads funny, WPI used to be called Worcester Tech, but abandoned that fine name when they chose to be defined only by the three initials W.P.I.
At around the same time, Worcester Boys Voke, along with the girls Vocational high school combined to move into a spanking new campus and assumed the Worcester Tech monicker with it's built in credibility. The new school has won national awards but it caused long time sports page readers a bit of confusion for a while.

WPI was never officially named Worcester Tech. It was founded in 1865 as the Worcester County Free Institute of Industrial Science. That name is today still etched of the facade of the schools first building, Boynton Hall. It officially became Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1887 and has kept this name since. The term Worcester Tech was a nickname long used by many to shorten its full official name. This practice fell by the wayside as people started to use the acronym WPI which was encouraged by the school with its branding. Some old timers still use the Worcester Tech term for the school.

To those of us who grew up in Worc it was just "tech". "Worcester" was never used a modifier.

The nickname still lives, but it is dying in the wake of Voke now taking over the moniker. Voke actively calls itself Worcester Tech. WPI never did. It was just a very commonly used nickname. When we had two Tech's - one pushing it and one not, it became easier to avoid confusion for the average local to abandon the nickname for WPI The first year the new Voke was opened they had some district basketball games there. Everything was announced (including the paper) as being at Worcester Tech. Everything was all messed up as many fans and all the refs went to WPI

Another great Tech school was W.I.T.I., Worcester Industrial Technology Institute(?) My cousin graduated from Medway High in 1969 and spent one post grad year at WITI. The tuition was paid for by the Medway Public Schools, just like if a student wanted to go to Norfolk County Agricultural School, even though he had graduated. The kicker was he also received $.10 per mile each way to commute. It was a 26 mile commute so he got $5.20 per day to drive to school (never missed a day!) $5.20 would be about $40 today, so he was getting $200 per week in today's dollars to drive to school. He studied auto mechanics and when he got his draft notice that background qualified him to be a jet mechanic in the Navy instead of a grunt in the Army, which could have saved his life.
I believe WITI was folded into Quinsagamond Community College, but it was a great resource while it existed.

The high school has a very nice gym and could fit a pretty fair number of people in there, probably more than enough for most high school games. They have/had 3 different nicknames (had banners for all of them up on the wall) and I don't recall any of the three being at any point in time offensive. Not sure why they've changed so many times.

Seemed like HC and WPI were the perfect capacity for the events. The Lynn/Putnam game was what one would call a nice crowd, nearly full, but not excessively so. I think they tried to set up the order of the games so the largest attended games wouldn't be back-to-back.

Originally it was Worcester Vocational High School was known as Boys trade. When Girls Trade closed and Boys Trade went co-ed, the name changed to Worcester Vocational Technical High School and was known as Voke. Even the basketball uniforms said Voke. When the new building opened they dropped the "Vocational" from the name. In the 21st century emphasizing technical sounds better.

Both HC and WPI have similar capacity venues. Harrington Auditorium at WPI seats 3,000 with the upper half permanent chair back seating. The lower section is all pull out bleacher style seating. There is no seating behind either basket. As mentioned above, there is now a parking garage (one of three at WPI) and surface lot behind it that runs along Park Ave (accessible from both Park Ave and Salisbury St) that can accommodate over 500 vehicles. Harrington is connected underground to the 140,000 sf WPI Sports & Recreation Center opened in 2013. The old adjoining Alumni Gym was torn down and replaced in 2018 with the Foisie Innovation Studio and Messenger Hall that is a combination classroom and residential facility.
