Another big transfer showed up today: SF/PF Sam Iorio of American, a 6-6 soph. He was AU's 2nd best player each of the past two years and was one of the two best frosh in the PL in 2017-18. Big loss for AU.
He was set back by a concussion midway through PL play, but was close to an All-PL player.

With all the kids that have walked from American in the last few years - Iorio and Delante Jones most prominently - have to believe Brennan is now on the shortest of leashes.

Eager to get Juan Jones' take on this.

Yes, it looked like next year might be the year for them to break out. With Iorio, they might well have been the preseason pick for 2nd place. But this is a serious setback.

There had been talk on the AU board earlier that Nelson might be looking to go to a higher level conference, apparently he's on track to graduate in 3 years. Wonder if Iorio's decision might rekindle those thoughts. Obviously would devastate the program if that happened.

The Princeton crew is really getting it done in the PL!

It's not good for us. Sam was a big part of what we did offensively. But this is very different from Delante. Delante had a foot out the door from minute one; he harbored aspirations that he could play in the NBA and wanted to go to a bigger program. He wound up at Seattle University, which is not a normal springboard to the pros, and averaged 12 points a game there this season-about the same he averaged for us, on a team that finished seventh in the WAC this season. If that's a path to the Knicks, well, it's a new one. On the other hand, I had no indication that Sam was unhappy here. He started every game for two years, got every shot he wanted and wasn't asked to be a primary defender. His parents came to almost every home game and were, by all accounts, happy with the program. He came from a league and program where he was coached hard, and said that's what he wanted at AU. So, I have no idea why he's leaving.
But, we're not falling off a cliff. Sam was not the second-best player on the team last year; Stacy Beckton was. Sam was the best shooter, to be sure. He played well and had to be accounted for by opponents, but was slowed by a concussion suffered in the Loyola game and never really regained his form afterward. We have Jacob Boonyasith available to take some of the offensive load, and Marvin Bragg, frankly, is a superior defender. Where Sam's absence will hurt most is with rebounding; he was outstanding on the glass for us. There isn't an obvious solution there.
And, while I obviously don't know for sure, I don't think Sa'eed's going anywhere. We have some trolls on our board who don't care for Mike Brennan and have been trying to sow discord for the past few weeks by posting rumors about mass defections. This, too, shall pass.

Can't blame some of the AU faithful for growing tired of Brennan, whose record outside of that first season with Jeff Jones' players has been terrible.

I wonder what his ceiling would be. I think he's a nice PL player, but is he good enough to see regular minutes in a conference like the A10 or American, assuming that he has aspirations to play at a bigger school.

Sam may think he can transfer up a level or two above the normal PL transfer, a la Sestina and Andree (with whom he was good friends in HS). We'll see. Maybe he will.
As for Brennan, I'm fairly certain I remember a congratulatory post from SOV when we won the PL in '14 about how you were envious of our coach. I recall no qualifiers at the time that his achievement that year should come with an asterisk. The record hasn't been great since, but we were nine games better this season than in 2017-18. Next year is likely his last unless we make/win the PL title game.

I guess things have changed since 2014.

Ithink there's no question he could see regular minutes for almost all A10 schools. Also for some in the American.

Having to sit a year means a school will have to pay 3 yrs to get 2 of play. May limit his choice.
