Since Grandison will definitely be expected to be “the guy” next year, let’s hope he makes his first All-PL team — preferably first!

Per forty minutes, Grandison's EFG% and TRB% were down from his freshman year, and his free-throw rate was half of what it was. In addition to his uptick in assists, his turnover and personal foul numbers were better. The rebounding drop-off is a particular concern. As a freshman, JG averaged 6.6 per 40 overall, 7.4 in conference. Last year, he had 5.7 per 40 overall, and just 4.5 in conference. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jacob-grandison-1.html

Very good in OOC games disappointing in league play, opposite of freshmen year when he got better as season progressed

Think drop off in play by Grandison and Green biggest factor in poor PL results.

Losing Niego to injury also a factor. This caused a ripple effect for playing time that did not work out. Hard to blame only 2 players when it was a team wide failure.

Losing Niego to injury also a factor. This caused a ripple effect for playing time that did not work out. The significance of Niego's absence in the team's performance is, at best, exaggerated, and at worst, a convenient fiction. He was a non-factor in six of the OOC games he played in, and was a DNP in three others. Holy Cross was 8-1 in those games.

in the six games you claim he was a non factor, maybe he contributed defensively or was a positive factor in the team offense, despite his stats. many elements decide games besides stats. so were we 5-1 or 6-0 in the games you claim he was a non factor ? Not a bad stat. A lot better than when he did not play. And I said that his absence was only A(=1] factor. There were many.

We were 8-1 in the OOC when Niego contributed little or nothing. See link to game logs above.

We won the first four games Niego missed, then unfortunately league play began.

There was something very defensible about HC last year for teams that allocated the time and resources to study in detail how to stop them and how to attack them. That would logically be league opponents who play HC at least twice a year in games with much riding on them in a one bid league.
I think opposing league coaches study the film, teach their players how to sidestep the flying Wallenda and then drill an uncontested three as the HC player leaps into the stands behind them.
If the HC coaching brain trust can outwit some of the opposing PL coaches some of the time it will be an improvement. I had the sense we caught some teams napping in the OOC schedule but not in the league schedule.

You say that like it's a bad thing. I bet his players are academic standouts. When he was at Princeton, with much success there, it was a level academic playing field for recruiting. At Northwestern, it had to be tougher than all the other schools in the league/conference with the possible exception of Michigan. At Holy Cross, the field for recruiting probably falls somewhere between the challenges of Northwestern and Princeton (easier than the former, harder than the latter).
Yeah, I think we all pretty much agree we have been disappointed with the results so far (exception being the playoff run/championship his first season) but I have to think this is a make or break year for his tenure at Holy Cross. If the string of sub .500 league record continues, I would be shocked if AD Blossom keeps him. In fact, I'd be greatly surprised if a sub 20 win season and he's retained/extended. Now, folks can say how difficult this would be but this would not be an outlier but an established trend. Any coach (Kearney excepted) is entitled to one or two bad years as "stuff happens." 5 years and it's "you, you, you . . . . . on YOU!"

Michigan could and can let in any minimum qualifier just as the rest of the big ten except Northwestern.

So, you will note “with the possible exception of” that you agree with my basic point. Carmody had an uphill recruiting battle at Northwestern. More so than he has in the PL.
Would you agree that in 5 seasons that he should have at least one winning record at HC? We hear how it is more difficult to get recruits admitted to HC than other PL schools but this point is very debatable.

I think back to the RW years where they were pretty vanilla early in the season on D and then added wrinkles as the season went on..Most good teams look different at the end of the season, and I don't see that as much in the past few years..the NCAA win s season, the 1-3-1 was added late in the year..Last season i didn't think much changed and we never caught PL teams by surprise...I'd love to see more defenses used in a game, and add them as the season progresses..I also think the team played better when they pushed the tempo...My feeling is let them get out and enjoy the games freedom, and also be willing to attack the glass, even if it means giving up a layup or 2...(shooting fewer 3's will mean fewer long rebounds to worry about)...

Nothing will change in the style next season.
This is who Carmody is and who he has been as a head coach for 20+ years. What we see is what we will get.

[ Re: Princeton being a level playing field, I completely disagree. Carmody took over for the most successful coach in the history of the league, had teams that were built and trained by said coach, and just continued to carry on with the exact same system. Since he has had to build a program for himself, he has not been able to reach even the middle of the pack of his league competition. A 17 year sample size tells me everything I need to know.

I forget to add, a major shift in coaching philosophy from Coach Carm as well. Thinking of man to man D, end the fly bys if in a zone, hit the offensive boards and look to run. Same old same same old isn't going to get it done.

I forget to add, a major shift in coaching philosophy from Coach Carm as well. Thinking of man to man D . . . Thinking of this, too. Thinking this has been a team that has opted to play demonstrably bad zone defense because it doesn't believe it can play competent man-to-man. In the Patriot League.
This needs to change.
