Then there is MLB’s leading BA, Jeff McNeill, who rarely either walks or strikes out McNeil's strike out rate - about 8AB/K - is not really remarkable. There are almost 1,000 players in MLB history who struck out at lower rates.

Of MLB’s top 50 BA, he has the 6th fewest strikeouts Not bad for one who has not yet played one full season

Baseball's Fred "Bonehead" Merkle (not to be confused with Fred Merkle HC '72) ...I knew that guy, fine fellow! Haven't heard his name in a long time.

The well-known outfielder "Stormin' Gorman" Thomas, and his less well-known contemporary, pitcher Thomas Gorman, aka . . "Stormin' Thomas" Gorman. In keeping with the reverse nickname idea, I give you pitchers Mark "The BIrd" Fidrych and Doug "The Fidrych" Bird. Inherited nicknames (because the last name was similar): someone mentioned Goose Gossage, who was preceded by Goose Gosger* who was preceded by Goose Goslin. *Gosger was mentioned as a deceased member of the 69 Mets last week in a pre-game ceremony. Fortunately for him, whoever was in charge of the event was incorrect and he's still alive. There may be others, but there's a decent chance he's the sole answer to this trivia question: Name a member of both the 69 and 73 Mets that didn't appear in either post season. At least, Baseball Reference doesn't show him getting in a game. Not surprising, given he hit .114 in 1969 for the Seattle PIlots (mostly) and the Mets.

In the context of modern baseball, that's darned good, however. There was a Globe article about a Sox prospect who played in the Futures Game and mentioned his exceptional speed (never a Sox strong point, although better recently). Then it said his strikeout rate was around 20%. Best way to negate your speed is not to hit the ball and not walk.

And speaking of nicknames, how about HOF pitcher Early Wynn. His real first name "Early" would be a good nickname and his nickname "Gus" would be a good real first name.
