Just out of curiousity, I looked at last year's transfer list. Of the first 100 names on it, 62 of them did not end up at D1 schools. Most of these players are ones who weren't good enough to play D1, and many were officially or unofficially run off their teams. Some others couldn't handle the academic rigors of their schools and ended up at JUCO's. It is better for everyone that this very large group chooses to transfer. Disagree as I think it is generational and the need to receive constant validation and worth, and perhaps even helicopter parents and friends as I said go back to senior only commitments and the kids will make better choices If you want to play pro basketball, it is better to be playing 30 minutes a night than 10 minutes a night for a school that doesn’t want you around.

Also the portal works both ways, the high level bench player can transfer down to the low major programs and get playing time.

One thing to keep in mind is that a significant number of those 972 were pushed into the portal by their coaches. They either were told they were unlikely to ever play, in an attempt to get them to transfer, or else they had their scholarship terminated - forcing them to transfer. I think it's healthier that they find new homes than to simply drop out of school. I don't have a problem with a coach being honest with a kid about playing time. I would however, hope that there are very few terminating scholarships and that those are with better cause than the player isn't as good as the coach thought he was, or worse still, just finds a better player and needs that scholarship. In a perfect world, word would get out that coaches that do that are jerks and it would hurt their recruiting in the long run. Maybe I'm just naive

I had not known he was "HC's best player." High scorer, yes, but there are others who I saw as "better players" so I never saw his as the "best"...starting with JF. I know this article is just Illinois propaganda. I wish him well (as a former Crusader) but really don't care what he is doing now.

2 opposing views 1-cannot blame him for trying to play at a high level of college hoops 2-blame him since when he came out of Exeter, HC was the only D1 to offer a scholarship. HC committed to him for four years. He betrayed his commitment by leaving after 2. He received the benefit of a free education for 2 years at an elite college as well as coaching which helped him improve each year. He used HC, while doing only half of his part.

This piece on Grandison was not put out by the UIllinois athletic department, but by a fan site. It appears this piece is part of a countdown assessing 13 Illini players, and he is #12 (of 13). As the piece notes, he cannot take the floor in a game until 2020-21.

I kinda have no idea why you reported my post with kinda editing. Your post was absolutely fine. It's JG's commentary on the Illinois site that kinda caught my (wise-guy) attention.

It is a person's viewpoint on JG's bailout from HC and some of the facts involved. In that, it is not mature or immature. Since you are a new arrival, perhaps you can tell us your view on what happened.

Since Grandison left only after the coach quit I think he weighed the option of using his junior year of eligibility transitioning to a new coach and system, or transferring to a new school using his sit out year learning a new system and hitting the ground running next year with two years of eligibility remaining. I don't hold a grudge against him for doing what he thinks is best for him. Hoops is big on the one offer loyalty pledge. It's the same argument he had about Stacom 45 years ago despite not taking into account the fact that HC was looking to downgrade athletics, had entered the Yankee Conference, and Brooks was trying to implement a need based scholarship program. Stacom wanted to play professionally and Providence not HC was going to give him the best opportunity to reach that goal.

Thanks for your analysis . Good memory. Grandison is not going to the NBA. Kevin could have gone to the NBA from HC. I blamed Gavitt more than Kevin.

Obviously Grandison is not an NBA talent but it's also obvious he was not in love with HC or he wouldn't have left over a coaching change. He wants to see how his game matches up at a higher level nothing wrong with that, hope it works out for him. Much easier for Stacom to reach NBA at Providence playing with superior talent, coaching and national attention. HC was stuck in the mud under Donohue and going nowhere.

No future NBA all stars, certainly not a Hall of Fame coach, and not a program that was looking de-emphasize sports.

Hoops you and I have very different views on the coaching abilities of Jack D which we have debated a number of times previously. I hated losing Stacom especially to Providence who I rooted against no matter who they played including the Russians. That being said its hard to look at it now and say it wasn't a great decision for him.

Thanks for your analysis . Good memory. Grandison is not going to the NBA. Kevin could have gone to the NBA from HC. I blamed Gavitt more than Kevin. Kot72 can respond as well but Gavitt and Reardon poached kevin away from HC. Kevin had a great career, would have had a great career if he didn’t leave, and like hoops says he would have made it to the NBA. Kevin and I discussed this after a playoff game against the Bullets-if I recall correctly he was more focused on Jack D as the reason for his departure. I thought Grandison was a solid player, had moments of being really good, and others where he hid and appeared very lazy-potential can be a curse. The same could not be said for Butler, who despite his injury always gave you his best effort. No comparison in my mind between the two players, I would take Butler every time over Grandison but time will tell. on the loyalty and commitment note I agree 100% with hoops
