Saw it on the NCAA Job Market, and I think it's a great idea. Perhaps a tough task to execute, but worth a try. My concern is the job description (italics and underlining added by me) --
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assist with all facets of NCAA Division I softball program by recruiting qualified prospective student-athletes, providing skill instruction to student-athletes, and preparing team for competition and practice. Assistant coach must perform duties in compliance with all College, Patriot League, and NCAA rules and regulations. Supports management of team academically and athletically. Tracks student-athlete academic progress; organizes and conducts practice activities. Prepares team and opponent video analysis; and maintains records as required. Evaluates and recruits student-athletes. Identifies talented, academically qualified prospective student-athletes and effectively communicates with coaches, prospects and parents. Respects department's commitment to excellence, integrity, respect and leadership. Collaborates with head coach to develop annual goals for program. Attends workshops, training sessions and meetings as required by the College and the conference. Assist with fundraising, marketing and promotional activities, administration of sports camps and/or clinics, and other duties as directed by head coach and/or Athletics Administration.
My understanding of NCAA bylaws that govern what a volunteer coach can and cannot do are (or at least were) pretty clear --
NCAA Bylaw 11.01.5 – Coach, Volunteer (relevant section only)
(a) The individual is prohibited from contacting and evaluating prospective student-athletes off campus or from scouting opponents off campus and may not perform recruiting coordination functions (see Bylaw 11.7.2)
They are allowed certain roles in communications (e.g. receiving calls after the appropriate date, receiving texts, etc., but not permitted to initiate contact at any point until LOI is signed). Did I miss a rule change or are the coaches/athletic department missing something?
