Oh I’m dying to see how this goes over with the more mature members of the board.

This is some kind of hoops family--remember that RJ's sister Castine was a big star at Kentucky

I wish Freddie the best (except, of course, against HC).

From HoopDirt, which may or may not be using Crossports as its source:
Word on the street is that UNC Asheville assistant RJ Evans is headed to Holy Cross. Evans played for the Crusaders from 2008-12, and finished as a grad transfer at UConn. He has also worked at Louisville and Texas. More on this one shortly.

this is fantastic! rj was a warrior as a player - tough as they come and one of my faves - was a motivated student, and brings some valuable relationships to hc. good on nelson. love this hire.

I always loved RJ's game. I do wonder how well his recruits will do from the foul line.

RJ immediately becomes the best rebounder on the team. The staff vs. team game is not going to be good for the team side.

I always loved RJ's game. I do wonder how well his recruits will do from the foul line. He'll certainly help emphasize the importance of getting to the line, which will be a most welcome change from the soft, contact-avoidant approach of the past few years. During his time at Holy Cross, Evans had a solid free throw rate of about 38% - by way of comparison, Floyd's was 40% for his career, and Butler has the best FTR among the returnees at just 25%.
Holy Cross Free Throw Rate (FTA/FGA) - Rank
15-16. 36.1% - 188th 16-17. 34.4% - 204th 17-18. 29.7% - 284th 18-19. 24.1% - 349th

For those who don't know what a free throw rate is, it is simply FTA/FGA. The higher the percentage, the more FTA's a player earns relative to his FGA's. The stat can sometimes be misleading for a PG who is being intentionally fouled frequently at the end of games. HC typically had a good FTR under Willard and still did well in FCSK's one year. But since then, they have done poorly in that category every year, culminating with a ranking of #349 nationally this past year. Unfortunately if players can't make FT's (e.g. Evans and Floyd) getting to the line isn't so beneficial

HR update to the campus community a few days ago extended a welcome to a group of new hires, one of whom was RJ.

Obviously, need to make your FTs, but have zero chance of doing so if you can't get to the line in the first place.
As bison knows, Bucknell has also often had high FTRs over the past several seasons.

Evans played for the Crusaders from 2008-12, and finished as a grad transfer at UConn. He has also worked at Louisville and Texas. More on this one shortly. Outstanding hire by Nelson. Didn't even take him a full month to start following my advice Best assistant coach at HC in 10 years. If the Nelson hire is at least partially the product of the relationship between RW and Billy Donovan, is it possible that a now 34-year-old Mark Daigneault would be a candidate for associate head coach? He would check a lot of boxes (probably all of them for what we’d need to complement what Nelson brings to the table). I know SOV will tell me he’s on the verge of becoming the head coach of the Warriors and there’s no way but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility. He left Florida for the G League in 2014 and is still there. He’s done some cool things including the Thunder summer league team and helping out with the big club after the G League season ends but he’s still not been promoted to the Thunder staff after 5 years. If he ever wants to get back to college, it would certainly help with that. If he’s fully committed to the pro ranks, obviously a non-starter. Here’s a pretty good recent article from the UConn paper in which he expresses an openness to returning to the college game at some point. dailycampus.com/stories/2019/4/2/catching-up-with-mark-daigneaultDaigneault joining Nelson’s staff would be amazing but is a pipe dream. One guy with connections to Nelson who I’d love to see on the staff is RJ Evans. Either way, I hope Nelson cleans house of Carmody’s crew and starts this program fresh with a well-rounded staff who complement him effectively.

Is Kennedy continuing to work at HC a done deal or is the top assistant's position still in play?

Is Kennedy continuing to work at HC a done deal or is the top assistant's position still in play? Information from a good source confirmed that he will be the lone holdover from the prior staff. It’s always a good idea to have one from the prior staff to act as a liaison with the ball players that came in a prior regime. JK”s dad was in the game at its highest level for many years and as a result, he has a lot of contacts nationwide. Good pick to hang onto.
