I suppose it is just a matter of time till the word 'midshipmen' is replaced by something less offensive and more inclusive/gender neutral. (Note: All Naval Academy students, men and women, are called midshipmen and the intercollegiate sports teams are known as the Navy Midshipmen).

The Navy football team did the right thing. The program is without a doubt a major pillar in the community and Im sure their gesture is widely appreciated considering such a tragedy occurrred so close to home.

. (Note: All Naval Academy students, men and women, are called midshipmen and the intercollegiate sports teams are known as the Navy Midshipmen). While technically that is correct, I've noticed that over 90% of the time in their articles and press releases on the Navy women's basketball and soccer teams, the Navy staff refers to them as the Mids. Very rarely do they call them Midshipmen, although very occasionally you might see it once in an article.

/\ True. And I see 'middies' occasionally used when referring to female midshipmen (as in 'female middies may now opt to graduate in pants rather than skirts'). I've seen male students referred to as middies too. Nevertheless, I think 'midshipmen' may be replaced by a more inclusive and less offensive (to some) term. West Point has cadets while Annapolis has Midshipmen. (Note: Navy, for example, has the Commandant of Midshipmen while West Point has the Commandant of Cadets).

It was a fairly short list, however kind of cool that there were two Patriot League schools on it

For a seasonal motto, I won't wave my usual banner of political correctness and bending the knee to all comers. It's clear that this is not a motto truly rooted in tradition, despite the military association, and despite the factual inaccuracies of how the media and general public use the terms "clip" and "semi-automatic," it's very easily and clearly linked to mass shootings without much imagination. Good move on the part of smart sailors.
