Colgate was ranked higher than every CAA team except Jas Madison last year if you believe in Sagarin Who they beat. Colgate-Maine would have been a great match-up last year. Different year, different teams. The result of Colgate's opener vs Nova wouldn't surprise me either way.

If Colgate loses at home v Villanova (and I think they will notwithstanding rank and home field advantage), they will have a very very tough time v Air Force the following week. I watched AF's home opener v Stony Brook last year and Stony Brook was blown out (38-0) - not sure if it was the altitude or the flight or AF's team speed but SBU looked slow (!) v Air Force. Obviously Villanova is not a must-win for Colgate - but I don't see any predictable W's (except W&M, I guess) in Colgate's first 5 games.

Colgate (13) vs Villanova Colgate +11 at Air Force Colgate (18) at William & Mary Colgate (10) vs Maine Colgate pick-em @ Dartmouth

I can't recall the last time Air Force struggled with an FCS opponent. Navy has won at least 10 straight against FCS with last loss being to Delaware in 2007 -- may have been a year or two when they played an FBS-only sked.
Was HC considered I-AA in 1978 when we beat AFA?

Was HC considered I-AA in 1978 when we beat AFA? No-- HC was "University Division" (I think that's what it was called through 1981. Then the NCAA started the 1-A and 1-AA separation. I was at that Air Force game--perhaps my fondest HC sports memory NOTE: see the correction below-I was wrong on the 1-A and 1-AA change---BUT I did go to the HC win over Air Force for sure!!!

Picking a nit but we were 1-A in 1978, as was Colgate and the Ivy League. The 1-AA level started in 1978 as UMass went to the 1-AA final in 1978. We, as well as the aforementioned schools, went 1-AA in 1982.
Bill Parcells was head coach of that AFA team btw

Not a nit pick by any means-- looks like I was just wrong. I saw that Sports-Reference had so many schools (HC, Colgate, Ivy league, etc) included with the Ohio States of the world through 1981 and that made me think that 1982 was the change year

Yeah...1982 was the year most schools who at one time were 1-A became 1-AA....big boys sort of pushed the smaller schools down that season. Not only the ones I mentioned but also the Southern Conference and Southland Conference. The MAC was also 1-AA for a year before returning to 1-A I believe.

Maine was picked a strong 3rd in the CAA preseason poll and Athlon Sports has Maine ranked 5th preseason (and Colgate ranked 18th). STATS has Maine 7th (and Colgate 13). HERO sports has Maine 4th (and Colgate over 25th). I know the rankings vary...nevertheless this is a very tough first five games (excepting, perhaps, W&M who were shut out by Colgate last year 23-0).

William & Mary might not be a "gimme" either. Game is down there is Colgate scheduled a "road-and-road" with the Tribe (both in Williamsburg).
Note that Mike London is taking over the reigns at W&M.

Give me Villanova. Honestly, I think it's basically a pick 'em.

Colgate graduated 8 of 11 starters from a tremendous defense. They also graduated their starting running back - though they always seem to find good running backs - who touched the ball on 32% of their offensive plays and accounted for 33% of their offensive yards from scrimage. Didn't follow it that closely last year, but it's been reported that Villanova had a number of key injuries injuries last year. It's the first game of the season so I'll assume they are reasonably healthy.
Villanova.

Based on CHC8485's succinct assessment, I'll also go with Villanova.
