A puzzle indeed unless we have one Known transfer likely or A member of the 2019 class is financing his own or on academic scholarship Very unlikely anyone would tell the coaching staff at this point that he was going to transfer after the year. As for an academic scholarship, that would only work if the player in question was not "recruited" by HC, based on the NCAA's definition of "recruit". Also would have to meet the normal standards for a non-athlete getting an academic scholarship of the same value. If this were Louisville, Kansas, etc, the most likely explanation would be that the coach was going to cancel someone's scholarship player after the season. Hopefully HC would not allow a coach to do that. Question on Sandy: When he committed, he didn't seem like a D1 scholarship player. No D1 offers. Committed long after the spring signing period. Ranked below the normal D1 player by NERR (#97). Etc. I know one article said he was given a scholarship, but was that confirmed? There have been thousands of Ivy and PL players over the year who were said to have athletic scholarships when their respective leagues didn't even allow athletic scholarships.

Yeah, my thoughts too, 137. I’m thinking Sandy isn’t a scholarship player.

FWIW VC has him on scholarship, distinct from the three walkons. Many of the tweets upon his signing and since have mentioned the word scholarship . I realize that is not ironclad , but it makes the scholarship very highly likely. I will try to find the HC release upon his signing.

Thanks Lou No mention of a scholarship, but when the November announcement for the first three came, there was only the mention of signing LOIs., no use of the word scholarship. Maybe Reilly is not in scholarship. But he gave up some scholarships to attend Exeter. Sandy and Reilly both committed too late for LOIs

"Joining the program" - good chance those speculating he is a walk on are correct. No other apparent explanation for 3 scholarship players in '20 class.

We will probably not find the answer any time soon, if at all. Perhps one, or even both, were promised a 1 year scholarship with the future to be determined ? Unlikely, but so are the other scenarios.

I realize that is not ironclad , but it makes the scholarship very highly likely. I will try to find the HC release upon his signing. What VC says is often wrong. They have no sources and do little research. They basically take twitter feeds and some articles and then try to figure out who is on scholarship. Considering the volume of commitments, they do a good job - but there are lots of errors. When Sandy committed, he did not mention getting a scholarship. Neither did the HC press release - which simply said he would be attending Holy Cross. Fwiw. NERR said he was on scholarship, but I have no idea who their source was or whether or not they confused need-based aid with an athletic scholarship. When a player commits in mid-May as his senior year is ending, and when he has no offers, it is not common for that player to suddenly get a D1 offer. Certainly possible however.

This is one of the best days on the recruiting front in a very long time. Congrats to Coach Nelson and staff for doing a great job despite getting a late start. It's nice to beat out some of our rivals for these players as this is what's needed to close the gap on the top teams in the league. If the current freshmen class is as good as advertised we'll have a nice foundation to build on.

For what it's worth, I just checked HC's verbal commits page. I know it's not the most reliable source, but they show negative one scholarships available for next year. Their math agrees with our confusion

Really, really hoping for the best, but I'll wait for games to be played before making a conclusion on our recruiting class. Been through this "light at the end of the tunnel" one too many times.

Been through this "light at the end of the tunnel" one too many times. fair enough. but the best metric of recruiting success has always been other offers, and martindale and rabinovich are very strong in that respect. i also really like the fact that nelson successfully tapped into the pipeline of local talent at WA.

Humphrey also had decent offers. Besides Lafayette and Brown, he also had Kent Stare (MAC), Sam Houston State (champ of Southland ) and Cleveland State ( Horizon).

I can see why some people are taking the wait and see approach as its been a long and for the most part disappointing 10 years. I think this is going to be a tough year as in my opinion we don't have enough talent to compete (hope I'm wrong) but that being said I'm very encouraged by what Nelson's done so far. It appears that he's upgraded the level of recruits we're pursuing and more importantly signing. Offers are important as they validate that not only are we impressed with a recruit but so are our rivals. Winning some these battles again is an important first step in turning the program around. Recruiting is certainly not an exact science and you can find a diamond in the rough but mining in lower level recruits is generally not a recipe for success. I'm hopeful that the two Michigan frosh will prove to be foundation pieces this year as they had better offers than many of our recent recruits.

Great news!, Just got back from a trip and I am so pleased to see this signing..When I saw him at the Elite Camp I felt he was going to be a very good player for somebody, and hoped it would be HC....From what I saw, and it was a limited time, he can do everything a top notch college player has to do to be successful...Many posters will be able to see him play this season, I'll sure try to get to a few games..

I've mentioned before my friend who played for Dee Rowe at Worcester Academy. I told him of HC signing the two WA stars. He still follows WA basketball a bit and said that Rabinovich was a "great get for The Cross", a complete ballplayer at both ends of the court.

Jen Toland has a short piece about the commitments of Rabinovich and Martindale in today's Telegram. Kind of surprised she didn't wait until signing day but maybe there will be a more extensive story a month from now. Best line was how much the two were impressed with Nelson's vision for the program.
