I’m not this passes muster as I thought I detected the sound of an “r” in Hah-vahd. 🧐 Lehrer was Jewish and (according to Wikipedia) from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I think he did a pretty good job hiding his accent.

Why would you have homecoming when students are away? Weekend after Harvard is Family weekend (game against Colgate). This was formerly known as Parents Weekend. Way back when average attendance was 15-18,000, there were two Parents weekends The home games after Colgate are Lafayette on Nov 9th (another holiday weekend), and Georgetown on the 23rd. As a rule of thumb, November dates in Worcester become too iffy weather-wise for celebratory events at Fitton. The better question is why do students need a nine day break six weeks after starting classes? Because the pampered profs demand it.

Not according to some previous posters who said the main reason is for students to do service projects

If we are educating "men and women for others" the longer breaks for service projects make a lot of sense.

Time to prepare ourselves for the criticism of the visitors locker room! Harvard sends it's own white glove cleaning crew ahead to prepare the visitors locker room .

Perhaps but wouldn’t bet a dime that is the case. Yet for those few who might participate, it might change the world I believe there are considerably more than a few. Over the summers and four years I agree completely-during a fall break I am not as sure, but applaud the effort of those truly committed. Would welcome the data and experiences from the school about the numbers and results from a fall or spring effort-social impact normally takes a significant contribution of time, as well as financial and human capital. That said, those young men and women working an hour or more to improve the lives of others have all of my support.

Are HC students involved more with service than at other LACs? Anyone have data? Other schools have this fall break or unique to HC?

And one other thing to highlight.
Almost 40 years ago, when I was a student, Holy Cross had Monday & Tuesday off for Columbus day. Not sure when it happened (15 - 20 years ago?) they added Wed, Thu, Fri to that.
To make up for the 3 added days off I think they cut a day off the Fall study period and compressed finals period by 2 days so net number of days/hours in class per semester is the same as it was in my first semester in the Fall of 1981.

OK back to the game...this should hopefully be a classic. Harvard impressive at 3-1 but those wins are at home I believe and against lesser opponents. Chesney has HC playing well and the Crusaders always seem to play really well against Harvard at home. HC could put them in the Top 25 or at the least getting votes.

The Fall Break was added in Fall 2010. I was a senior and experienced 3 years of Monday and Tuesday off and then 1 year of a full week break. They had only one trip planned for that break if I remember correctly, but were adding more in future years. Fall Break worked out for my wedding, less kids and traffic on campus!

Are HC students involved more with service than at other LACs? Anyone have data? Other schools have this fall break or unique to HC? I don't have data, but I would say HC has way more students involved with service than other LAC's in general. Service is very big at other Catholic colleges and I think it's a Catholic thing more than a liberal arts thing. Not a direct correlation to what students are doing, but I do know that HC sends more kids into the Jesuit Volunteer Corps than any other school in the country. That is not a percentage, but more kids than BC, Georgetown, etc. That suggests to me that there is more of a service culture at HC than many other Catholic schools

I gather he was before your time. I will say I don’t recall hearing this ditty before. Great find. Having a math background, I always liked his song "Lobachevsky". And he did a great song about the Periodic Chart of the Elements, which I bet most people have heard although not knowing where it came from. .... I am never forget the day I first meet the great Lobachevsky. In one word he told me secret of success in mathematics: Plagiarize! Plagiarize, Let no one else's work evade your eyes, Remember why the good Lord made your eyes, So don't shade your eyes, But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize... Only be sure always to call it please, "research". .............. There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, And hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium, And nickel, neodymium, neptunium, germanium, And iron, americium, ruthenium, uranium, Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium, And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium, And gold, protactinium and indium and gallium, And iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium. There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium, And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium, There's strontium and silicon and silver and samarium, And bismuth, bromine, lithium, beryllium, and barium. There's holmium and helium and hafnium and erbium, And phosphorus and francium and fluorine and terbium, And manganese and mercury, molybdenum, magnesium, Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium. And lead, praseodymium and platinum, plutonium, Palladium, promethium, potassium, polonium, And tantalum, technetium, titanium, tellurium, And cadmium and calcium and chromium and curium. There's sulfur, californium and fermium, berkelium, And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium, And argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, zinc and rhodium, And chlorine, carbon, cobalt, copper, tungsten, tin and sodium. These are the only ones of which the news has come to Harvard, And there may be many others but they haven't been discovered.
