Funny, scrolling through the all-time results now, I noticed we didn't play BC in 1943. I suppose I knew this at one point but had forgotten ovah the years.
Looking it up, BC really shortened their season in '43, playing only 4 or 5 games. Ironically they were captained by future HC HC Ed Doherty that season. We played again in '44 but BC also had a shortened season that year too. Just curious why we weren't as affected as BC football-wise in 1943 and 1944, playing mostly full schedules both years. Was it our Navy/V-12 etc. connection? Anyone here know?

HC was boosted by a strong ROTC program.

Unfortunately, HC lost two football players who served in the war to other schools after the war. The great George Conner to ND and The receiver Bill Swiacki to Columbia. Swiacki caught the winning pass at Baker Fiejd in Columbia's famous upset ending West Point's winning streak in 1947. Swiacki was a consensus All American in 1947, as was Connor. Swiacki selected by six of the eight NCAA recognized voting services, Connor by four. Other notables on the eleven man consensus 1947 team included Doak Walker, Johnny Lujack, Chuck Bednarik, and Bobby Layne The 1947 HC team (without Swiacki or Connor) went to the Orange Bowl. Must have been one helluva recruiting class at HC.

Bill Swiaki's son, Bill jr. was a three sport star at Amherst College (class of '78) and was drafted by both the NFL Giants and the MLB Dodgers. I met him once and was quite impressed. Bill Sr. died in 1976 when a gun he was cleaning in his basement accidentally fired, which was quite tragic.

Every Orange Bowl telecast shows the final play to make sure we don't forget it.
