I felt good that Jon Jon Roberts had such a positive personal last game! h'bout DB Kortebein?... he looked awfully good running the ball So good that they stopped kicking to him... his returns were a highlight of the game, and #1 as well

They make me wonder who may currently be on the team, with talent that we have yet to see. I look forward to see what our coaches are putting together for next year. As much as I look forward to seeing our new group of recruits in the Fall, I hope they are not "needed" and do not play until the coaches (and the athletes themselves) believe they are ready to go!

I felt good that Jon Jon Roberts had such a positive personal last game! h'bout DB Kortebein?... he looked awfully good running the ball He came in as a running back and ran the ball one time for 8 yards as a freshman. As a soph he was moved to defensive back and that is where he has been since. He's a special teams monster--remember he blocked two punts last season at Georgetown that were immediately returned for touchdowns by Spencer Gilliam and then Peter Oliver. He returned three punts last year for 52 yards (17.3 yards per return) and three kick offs this year for 128 yards (42.7 yards per return)---very small samples but for perspective we can see that Brett McDermott's 25.7 yards per kickoff return is the career highest while John Provost's 18.3 yards per punt return leads that category. One does have to wonder if maybe Macklin was an untapped resource as far as returns go--certainly could have tried him on punts this year...

A very good special teams performer. Not to take away from his kick returns yesterday, it did seem to me that the Monmouth kick coverage was not very good, and I do wonder what he might have done if he had been used on kick returns during the regular season.

I loved the total North-South aspect of his returns; absolutely no messing around.

Any word on who might be the 11th opponent? Game on Sept 26th?

Assuming accurate (no reason to doubt), that's 10 games and 2 open dates (9/26 and 10/31). Presume that one more game will be added.

Mr. Kortebein was a very pleasant surprise and I didn't recall him playing at all (well, returning kickoffs) all year. Was thrilled with his results but sooooo disappointed to find out this weapon was a senior. I wonder what would have happened had he been returning kickoffs and/or punts all year? Recall how many kickoffs resulted in fumbles this season.
Glad to see Jon Jon get his receptions and TD in his last game.
Met Joe Lang's father pre-game. Great guy. He was surprised to learn HC has never won a post season game (believe that is right - lost Orange Bowl, lost to Western Carolina, lost to Villanova) Unfortunately, our streak continued. He told me that Joe has to fight to keep his starting position every week because of the great competition he is getting from the younger players but he thinks that's great and the way it should be.
As others have already posted, our special team play was outstanding (except for place kicks). Onside kick recovery, great Kortebein KO returns, blocked PAT, blocked punt, etc.
We lost for a couple of reasons: 1. errors (think 2 of CD interceptions right to multiple defenders and Asante missing a very catchable pass that deflected into Monmouth hands - 3 turnovers to 0; another slew of dropped passes a la Fordham 1st half) and 2. Monmouth having 2 Walter Peyton award finalists - their QB is the real deal and was outstanding but slightly diminished after pulling up lame and their running back who has both size and speed. Like in the Fordham game, Assante at least partially redeemed himself with yet another circus TD reception that was initially ruled incomplete. We were sitting in that very corner of the stadium and I was sure it was incomplete and surprised they even reviewed it. The replay on the jumbotron (yes, they have a very nice one but the down and yardage was very slow to update) clearly showed both I and the refs had it wrong. Just "WOW!!"
In my admittedly biased view, we were not beaten against a more talented team but by our own mistakes. Turnovers usually hurt but yesterday the timing was momentum killers as well.
Re: Guerriero, between running and receiving, he accounted for 248 yards the 32 times he ran/caught the ball for a 7.75 yards per possession. Domenic Cozier ran/caught the ball 18 times and gained 161 yards for an average of 8.94 yards per possession. The problem was we did not get the ball in his hands often enough. An issue all season long. I will say that, though it was too little, too late, I was happy to see the two shovel passes to Domenic that both gained nice yardage.
Finally, I don't think Domenic would mind me sharing this message he sent to me as my son was driving me back from the game, a trip from hell (good weather but lots of holiday traffic added probably 2 hours to our trip back to New England):
Domenic has been a class act and great captain.

With the advantage of slow motion replay, I have no idea how that TD could have been ruled incomplete. The ball never touched the ground, either a TD or interception, but how he called incomplete was a mystery

The announcers said it was a "simultaneous catch." One announcer said that he played defense and that in such cases it is declared a completed catch by the receiver. Turns out he was correct.

Lou, from my vantage point and obviously the refs, it appeared (incorrectly, also obviously, after review) that while the ball never touched the ground, it also appeared that neither Assante nor the defender had possession until they both rolled out of bounds. Therefore a ruling of incomplete.

Great turnout by the HC fans. Monmouth fans, wow. Not even loud. To bad some early turnovers cost us the game. But we never quit and played hard until the end. Need to keep working for next year and we will come out with an even better record.

Here is the link to the Holy Cross highlights of the Monmouth game. Watching these you might think the Crusaders won the game but, nevertheless, fun to re-live. I and sader1998 have a cameo appearance in the stands immediately after Assante's spectacular catch. About 1:30 spot. One other observation, Coach Chesney's father starts out the video leading team cheering. As far as I know, he has no official position with the team but his presence on the sidelines is ubiquitous. Had the pleasure of meeting him and chatting with him and the rest of the family at the introductory press conference. Anyone know if he is "officially" involved with the team? Here's the highlights link: goholycross.com/watch/?Archive=556&type=Archive

I was at the game and was quite impressed with the Holy Cross crowd - a very good turnout. I thought the stadium was nice and totally befitting of FCS football at this level. As far as the game was concerned, I didn't appreciate coming into the game just how athletic MU was. Their defensive line was tremendous holding the HC running game in check all afternoon. I can't recall one ill advised throw that their QB Bahar had all afternoon. Their RB Pete Guerriero is totally legit and he's only a Junior. The kid's lateral movement along the line of scrimmage and his ability to get to the edge was impressive. On numerous occasions it looked like HC had him stopped but he was able to move laterally and get outside for positive yardage. I would not be surprised in the least if Guerriero finds his way onto an NFL roster after leaving MU. The HC QB play clearly needs to be better in order to take the program to the next level. Degenhardt does not effectively look off receivers. He seems to lock in on a target and everyone knows where the ball is going. Lifting him for Considine was well advised, as he fared considerably better. When the offense did have success, it sputtered at inopportune times and lost out on scoring opportunities. After the onside kick recovery, there was a real chance to climb back into the game, but we then quickly squandered that opportunity with an INT. There were two very well coached teams competing down there on Saturday, and the more talented team won IMHO. However, there's a lot to look forward to next year. The future is bright.
