9th place HC at (surprisingly) 6th place Air Force in Colorado Springs tonight and tmro. Both teams have been disappointments so far and are desperate for points. Our last chance before exam break. We'll be digging ourselves a very deep hole to climb out of if we don't have some success here.

I am sure head coach DB will give FADNP a warm greeting. It will be a good accomplishment to beat the Falcons in the thin air.

He should, especially with his contract locked into another 3 years, as I have heard.

Another loss coming - down 5-2 late in the 3rd 2-11-2 in our last 15 games against AHL teams. Wonder if FADNP had a smirk on his face tonight watching the game.

We really need to move on from Berard. Definitely one of Pine’s worst moves as AD was the 2018 extension. We have seen nothing from Berard suggesting he can turn this around. Good guy. Well respected in the coaching community. Not coming close to getting it done. A modern-day Sean Kearney. Only Regan fired Kearney after one season. FADNP extended Berard after several mediocre to poor seasons. .

I can’t imagine HC is going to buy out HCDB’s contract. We are stuck with him until 2022.

I did not see the game after the first period. Can someone tell me what happened? The first period play was about even with HC holding a 2-1 lead. Then it seems the roof fell in, with AF outscoring HC 6-0 the rest of the way.

One question I have is whether it’s after the 2021-22 season or 2022-23 season when the contract expires. The release announcing the extension said he was being extended through the 2022 season.

Something definitely amiss with this program.

Recruiting in a low major hockey league for a traditional BB school with tight admission criteria and less than a D-1 maximum complement of schollies may be challenging.
Taking nothing away from the BB programs at AIC, Bentley, etc., Hockey is the only D-1 sport at those schools. I don't know how to quantify the difference with HC, but there is a difference - probably with some pluses and minuses.

This is assuming the contract was fully guaranteed and without some type of buyout options for poor performance. Pine’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but hopefully we was at least smart enough to not fully guarantee a contract extension for a coach who would have absolutely zero.zero demand for other job openings.

For better or worse Berard was extended beyond what made sense due to his connections within the Hockey East office.

Tied after ot’s today 3-3 and we lost 4-3 in the shootout - we pick up 2 points (I think)

This program is spiraling downward. Seems bleak right now. Maybe the long layoff will help and a fresh start at the end of the month. Who knows. Reaching for anything right now.... Are we really this bad or is it the coach ?

Coach and his recruiting.

Are we at a structural recruiting disadvantage to the other AHA schools or is it a matter of talent identification skills and player development skills of the coaching staff? We only won one league championship under Coach Pearl, if I recall correctly and he was considered a good coach.
Is it a case where we can't compete for talented high academic kids against the Ivies and the little Ivies and Hockey East, and we can't admit the talented lower academic kids that other AHA schools can so we end up with less talented high academic players?

At 3-9-4 with his 2nd+ year of all his recruits it just seems like it is not working out at HC. Not sure how much HE takes into account our poor performance the last several years but it doesn't help.

Good points Longsuffering, Recruiting is difficult in the AHA to begin with, add the high academic requirements no one else has (other than the service academies). In addition, HC is the most expensive of the AHA schools (hockey is primarily a partial scholarship sport for the vast majority of players). So kids and their families still have to come up with 6 figures to attend HC even assuming we max out scholarships (which is an assumption on my part). And fairly or not, the decision not to invest in hockey facilities with the Luth renovation, is certainly being used by other coaches as a sign HC Hockey is not a priority with the school administration and athletic department. So, that doesn’t excuse the coach and his staff for the last season and a half and previous failures in the playoffs. It is up to Berard and staff to properly showcase the school and convince quality kids of the immense opportunities a HC degree can provide. The team should be putting up a better record and a more consistent effort against AHA opponents (5-0 third period drubbing against AF comes to mind vs 2 wins against the 1st place SHU in their building). But I do not see a buy out and /or hiring the next Jerry York in the cards. We will have Berard for the remainder of his contract at least.
