A very strange end of game strategy by Nelson.
Army was still in the single bonus and with HC trailing by five points and under a minute to go, Nelson elected to play the possession out rather than fouling. Sure enough, Army scores to go ahead by seven, after being able to milk the clock before shooting.
I would have fouled much earlier on, which would have 1) saved time, 2) could have gotten the ball back if Army misses the front end of the one and one.
Oh well.

Certainly an interesting scenario, but if Nelson was thinking that if the game got to 7 points (3 possessions), it was over and our best chance was getting one stop to have a chance to cut the lead to 3 at the other end, I would certainly understand that strategy. It would be a different equation if we had the horses to continue scoring while trading free throw opportunities with Army, but that is clearly not the case this year. Looking purely at numbers and assuming that going down 7 virtually ended the game: Tommy Funk is a 68.1% free throw shooter, so the probability of him going 2-2 in that situation would be 46.4%. Army was shooting 44.4% on FGs prior to that last field goal.

When you are chasing points at the end of a game, you better damn well use up all of your fouls in the single bonus. You have three chances to get a possession back if the opponent misses the front end. Nelson didn’t even force Army to make free throws until the game was over. In the scenario you lay out above, if HC fouls with :58 left, which is when Army rebounded HC’s missed shot, and Army makes both free throws, you can still extend the game by coming down the floor and getting a quick two with ~:45 remaining. Right back where you started from. Instead, HC is down seven with :35. Game over. Army was 9-15 FT on the night and shoots it at 62% on the season, which ranks 347th nationally. Maybe force them to hit some free throws to put the game away?

Maybe force them to hit some free throws to put the game away? Wrong if it's a 5 point game with 45 seconds left, then you are forced to foul on that possession and basically every possession from then on. And you're making an assumption that we are going to be able to score every possession at the other end after Army attempts their free throws, this coming after Butler missed a layup when we had a chance to cut it to 3 on the previous possession. If the game gets to 7 with ~50 seconds left, that makes it a three possession game, and if Army went 2-4 on their next to 2 trips to the line, that would mean we would have needed to hit 3 3-pointers in a row to tie the game. The odds of that happening are slim and none.

Against Navy Saturday, Army blew a six point lead in the final 41 seconds of regulation by missing four straight free throws and then committing two stupid fouls on Navy shooters.

If HC fouled Army with :58 left and they missed the front end, all of a sudden a quick two by HC affords them the opportunity to play out the next defensive possession, as they would be trailing by one possession and would get the ball back on a defensive stop.
We have been blown out in the majority of the losses this year, so haven’t really seen much of Nelson’s end-of-game management, but tonight wasn’t great.

Another outstanding viewing experience on Stadium — this time we get to watch without a scoreboard! how long are we stuck with stadium? League-wide arrangement cut by the PL home office, so you're stuck w/Stadium as long as the PL deal is in place, which is likely a couple more years at the minimum.

Against Navy Saturday, Army blew a six point lead in the final 41 seconds of regulation by missing four straight free throws and then committing two stupid fouls on Navy shooters. Which makes Nelson’s decision even more perplexing. I can’t imagine there are many other coaches out there that would allow the opponent to burn off 20+ seconds in the final minute when it’s a two possession game. Why not come out to pressure the ball and either force Funk to give it away and then foul, or force a turnover, or just foul Funk? Nelson largely gets a pass this year due to having one of the worst rosters in Division I basketball, but he’s fair game for in-game decisions like this one.

0-3 on two point field goal attempts tonight, while heaving up nine 3's

Too late to make a difference this season, but it's good to see that AB looks like he has recovered from his injury: 17 points and 8 boards tonight with 3 assists and 0 turnovers What has also been nice to see is that he’s turned into a good free throw shooter (77% this season). Let’s make sure he, and others, get to the line more. Butler is averaging just two FTA per game. HC ranks 342nd in getting to the line this season. This, among countless other things, needs to improve.

Hearkening back to RW on this score . . .Willard's offensive approach was a little ugly to watch at times, but it produced lots of free throws. Seven times in ten years Holy Cross finished in the top 75 in FTR. The 2000-01 team had an FTR of over 65%, which still stands as the highest D1 rate this century. That team made 200 more free throws than its opponents, about 7 more per game - critically important during a season in which HC's average scoring margin was +5.5.
It looks like the guards and wings coming in next season are all attack-minded, know how to get to the line, and are above-average free-throw shooters.
